Chevals Diamond and Lola Weidemann shine bright at Ekka 2017
In front of a big crowd at the Brisbane Exhibition the Lola Weidemann trained Chevals Diamond produced a great performance to win the $10,000 Garrards / Big Dog Pet Foods Ekka Show Final.

Bouncing to the lead from barrier one Chevals Diamond had no peace in running when challenged strongly by stable mate Miss Catalina and Jimmy Nga who pushed forward three wide from the second row barrier draw.

The trio went toe to toe for almost two laps until Jimmy Nga, who was trapped off the track three wide, was restrained by his driver Justin Storie towards the rear.

In the final lap Chevals Diamond broke clear to score a decisive win with the grey Ghost Gum for Julie Weidemann chasing hard for second and Jimmy Nga ran a phenomenal race running home for third for trainer Lacey Hinze.

In winning the Ekka Final, Chevals Diamond tied with Miss Catalina as Horse of the Show, each with 12 points, and Lola Weidemann was awarded both the trainer and driver of the Show recording eleven wins as a trainer and five as a driver with numerous placings.

The Consolation of the Garrards / Big Dog Series was taken out earlier in the afternoon by Risky Buziness for trainer / driver Ricky Gordon.  After beginning brilliantly to lead Risky Buziness was allowed to roll along and was never in danger of defeat, winning from Its You Not Me for Noel Parrish and he recorded the fastest winning time of the Show.

The S0/S1 Final was won by Moonlight Butcher for trainer / driver Darren Ebert leading throughout for a strong win over Jaycee Style for trainer Kevin Annetts and driver Noel Parrish.

The Ebert clan completed a race-to-race double when Darren and Rebecca Ebert’s son James, who had his eighth birthday during the Show, won the mini trot just minutes later.

The daily Show Final winners included:
  • August 11, Twinkle (trainer Lola Weidemann and driver Stacey Weidemann)

To all competitors during the 2017 Ekka Show, your time and effort in promoting harness racing to a large audience is acknowledged with much appreciation.

An Ekka spokesperson said: “The trots are not just a popular part of the EkkaNites Show but have been a part of the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) for decades and reflect the lengthy relationship between Racing Queensland and the Ekka, with both racing exhibitions and “mini-trots” proving crowd favourites. With more than 650 horse competitors at Show in 2017, equine sports are a core part of the Ekka’s entertainment and competition schedule which Racing Queensland is proud to support."
