RQ boosts QBRED incentive scheme

Back to All News

Racing Queensland (RQ) has moved to boost its highly successful QBRED incentive scheme, and now has more than $1 million in bonuses and stakes to be won in 2017/18.

RQ will introduce a Breeders Classic Series culminating in two $25,000 finals (fillies, and colts and geldings) at a showcase QBRED meeting in May 2018, and extend its first-win incentive scheme to 4YO and older horses.

In addition to $7500 first-win bonuses for two and three-year-old horses, eligible horses aged 4YO and older – commencing in the 2017/18 season – can claim a $2500 in first-win bonus.

It means owners and breeders will now be eligible to claim up to $17,500 in bonuses throughout their horse’s careers, ensuring sustained returns to participants over a longer period.

RQ Chief Executive Officer Dr Eliot Forbes said the increases would make Queensland an even more attractive jurisdiction to race a pacer or trotter.

“The introduction of the Breeders Classic Series will complement a strong list of existing features headlined by the Triad Series, which offers $350,000 in prizemoney for horses aged 2-4 years old,” Dr Forbes said.

The enhancement will continue in 2018/19, with RQ to introduce a 2YO Trotters feature, and a 3YO Trotters feature in 2019/20.

Queensland Square Trotters Association representative Wayne Dossetto, said it was pleasing to now see the feature races in the calendar after years of discussion.

“This is an exciting development for trotting in Queensland, which can only enhance breeding and racing opportunities. The association looks forward to continue working with RQ to further increase QBRED trotting prospects in the state,” he said.

Queensland Breeders, Owners, Trainers and Reinspersons Association (BOTRA) representative Daniel Costello welcomed the move.

“The breeding industry is the foundation of the sport," Mr Costello said.

"All financial assistance that can be given to owners to breed QBRED is welcomed by the industry. Of course, we look forward to further breeding benefits going forward.”

Key Enhancements to the QBRED scheme are:

  • Introduction of a $2,500 first-win 4YO bonus

  • QBRED eligible horses can now win up to $17,500 in lifetime bonuses

  • Introduction of a 2YO QBRED Breeders Classic Finals at $25,450 for each sex

  • Creation of a full QBRED feature race meeting on May 12, 2018

  • QBRED 2YO Trotter feature included from 2018/19 and 3YO Trotters feature from 2019/20
