Baker chasing Magic Millions history

By Glenn Davis

Sydney trainer Bjorn Baker is growing in confidence of capturing the Magic Millions Holy Grail at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The Baker-trained Winning Rupert looks to have a stranglehold on the Magic Millions Guineas and is a short priced $1.60 favourite to claim the 1400-metre feature.

Baker believes stablemate Goodfella is the forgotten runner in the Magic Millions Classic after the colt was runner-up to Ours To Keep in the Group 3 Bruce McLachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm last start.

No trainer has ever completed the Magic Millions Classic-Guineas double on the same day but Baker is on the verge of creating history.

In an ominous warning to his Guineas rivals, Baker believes Winning Rupert has improved since winning the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate at Eagle Farm on December 31.

And he believes barrier 13 is an ideal draw for Goodfella who will be chasing Baker’s second Magic Millions Classic victory.

“I thought Goodfella’s run in the Bruce McLachlan was excellent,” Baker said.

“He’s seasoned now and I think the penny has finally dropped with him.

“I think the draw will suit his racing pattern.”

Goodfella, a $19 chance in latest UBET markets, is following a similar program as Unencumbered who won the Magic Millions Classic in 2014.

“He (Goodfella) is on a similar path as Unencumbered,” Baker said.

“They both ran in the Bruce McLachlan and went into the Magic Millions at their sixth run.

“Goodfella hasn’t got the same natural ability as Encumbered but I’m pretty bullish about his chances.”

Goodfella won his only start on a heavy track at Canterbury before heading to Queensland and any rain won’t concern Baker.

However, it’s a different story with Winning Rupert if rain was to fall.

“My only real concern with Winning Rupert is if it happened to rain,” he said.

“He hasn’t done a lot in the wet and it’s a bit of an unknown.

“But he had a good gallop on the course proper at the Gold Coast this week and I couldn’t be happier with him.”

Baker isn’t feeling any pressure ahead of the gala Magic Millions day and wasn’t aware of his possible history making feat.

“I’m just glad to have a few runners on the day as I’ve also go Egyptian Symbol running in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares,” he said.
