Mackay Turf Club to pay tribute to well-respected farrier

Back to All News
Jockeys at Saturday’s North Queensland Derby meeting at the Mackay Turf Club will wear black armbands to remember farrier Fred Savage.

Mr Savage, the on-course farrier at Mackay for more than 10 years, was tragically killed in a car accident on Thursday morning.

Mackay Turf Club Racing Manager Joe Hynes said the community was still coming to terms with the tragedy.

He said Mr Savage would be remembered as a well-respected member of the racing community.

“Fred was a really likeable bloke and a good farrier,” Mr Hynes said.

“He was pretty quiet but he always enjoyed a joke.

“To hear the news yesterday was a big shock to the racing community.”

A GoFundMe page has been established to help support Mr Savage’s family following the tragedy.
