Trainer Lyle Wright has given punters a strong pointer with his preference for Cyclone Fugitive in his three-pronged attack in the Open Handicap at Rockhampton on Tuesday.

Wright has a team of 10 horses in work and will have seven of them running at Callaghan Park.

As well as Cyclone Fugitive, Wright has veteran Tambo’s Heart and Jack Lancaster facing off in the 1100-metre dash.

Cyclone Fugitive hasn’t missed a place in five starts this campaign with two wins and three placings and is coming off a last start second to Raiden over 1050 metres at Rockhampton on April 7.

“I’ve got three in the race but Cyclone Fugitive is the best chance,” Wright said.

“I had thought of setting him for the Newmarket Handicap during the winter carnival up here but that doesn’t look like happening now with the coronavirus restrictions.

“He’s a pretty good horse and copped a check last time which probably cost him a bit and he only got beaten half a length.”

Cyclone Fugitive is no relation to Wright’s top sprinter Cyclone Topgirl who has won 10 of her 16 starts.

“They’re both home bred but they’re not related other than being by the same sire Changeintheweather,” he said.

Meanwhile Wright also is hopeful Emilee’s Empire can finally shed her bridesmaid tag in the QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap (1100m).

Wright also has debutante Tambo’s Queen in the same race but is confident Emilee’s Empire can end a frustrating run of four consecutive seconds from as many starts this campaign.

At her latest appearance, the daughter of Carrara went down just over two lengths to Ask Me Tomorrow in a 1200-metre Maiden at Mackay last month.

“I’m hopeful she can win as she led last time and just failed to run out 1200 metres,” he said.

“She’s back to 1100 metres which is more to her liking.”

Emilee’s Empire was not eligible for the recent Capricorn Yearling Sales Classic after Wright bought her privately for $3,000 but never paid up for her when she was passed in at the sales.
