Trainer Toby Edmonds is hoping to end a roller-coaster week on a positive note when Wisdom Of Water and The Drinks Cart clash in the Aquis Gold Nugget at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Edmonds, who trains in partnership with son Trent, rates Wisdom Of Water as their best two-year-old but had a few anxious moments when the colt was named an emergency in the 1110-metre feature when acceptors were declared on Wednesday.

He also has high hopes for Smart ‘N’ Sexy who clashes with the stable’s first starter Queen Kay in the Aquis Gold Pearl.

Smart ‘N’ Sexy hasn’t raced since finishing second on debut to Away Game in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben on December 18.

Edmonds was in New Zealand at the time preparing Winter Bride for the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ellerslie on Wednesday and was later relieved to learn of the scratching of Mishani Bling which enabled Wisdom Of Water to sneak into the Gold Nugget field.

Winter Bride continued Edmonds’ Group 1 frustration when she was trapped wide off a bad barrier to finish second in the 1200-metre New Zealand feature.

Edmonds is yet to win at the highest level but has finished second twice with Sagaronne in the 2015 J J Atkins and Tyzone in last year’s Stradbroke Handicap.

Wisdom Of Water needs to win the Gold Nugget to book a place in next week’s $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast.

The son of Headwater was a $70,000 buy at the Magic Millions sales last year but has only $3,500 in the bank after finishing fourth on debut behind the Rob Heathcote-trained Rothfire at Eagle Farm in November.

Edmonds expects an improved performance from Wisdom Of Water who won barrier trials at the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast prior to his debut.

“He was quite agitated at his first run and I probably should have waited and tried to get to the Magic Millions via the back-door,” he said.

“He had three weeks off after the run and he’s strengthened up nicely since.

“He’s a pretty sharp colt and probably our sharpest two-year-old at present.”

The Drinks Cart has overcome a minor setback after finishing fourth to Gotta Kiss at Eagle Farm on December 21 and also needs valuable prizemoney to earn a Magic Millions berth.

“He had a slight setback with a blood abnormality after his last run and I thought he went into the race a bit soft,” he said.

“He’s improved but our horses that go to Eagle Farm seem to struggle in their first starts there.”
