Trainer Dan Bougoure is confident promising filly Lady Belzone can deliver on her potential and aim for bigger riches next year when she looks to break her maiden status at Gatton on Thursday.

Bougoure will head to Gatton with three runners and declared Lady Belzone as the pick of his trio in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1400m).

He also saddles up Ooshe in the Class One Handicap (1100m) and Saute in the Benchmark 55 Handicap (1400m).

Lady Belzone, a daughter of Bel Esprit, has been placed three times in her five-start career and is knocking on the door for her first win.

At her past two starts, Lady Belzone was narrowly beaten by the Kelly Schweida-trained Cellarmaid in a 1350-metre maiden at Doomben before finishing second again in a 1400-metre maiden at the Gold Coast last month.

“If she carries her form from her last two runs, she’ll be very hard to beat,” Bougoure said.

“Cellarmaid beat her in a photo two starts back at Doomben then she just got beaten again at the Gold Coast by Luana.

“She was a bit slow to go at the Gold Coast and then got held up coming into the straight when the winner had all the momentum.

“Win, lose or draw, she’ll be going for a spell after this race.”

Bougoure paid $42,500 for Lady Belzone at the QTIS March sales at the Gold Coast.

“She wasn’t a real expensive filly and she’s picked up $16,000 in prizemoney from her two recent placings,” he said.

“She’s a typical Bel Esprit and is taking time to mature but I’d like to think she’s up to a good race during the winter carnival next year.”

While Bougoure rates Lady Belzone his best hope, he still is quietly confident both Ooshe and Saute will run well.

“Ooshe needed the run and knocked up when she ran over 1200 metres at the Gold Coast last start.” He said.

“She’s back to 1100 metres here and from the good draw should be hard to beat.

“Saute has the ability to win also and should be competitive but he’s still very green.”
