Of concern was apprentice English’s lack of vigour in the first 100m of the race, which saw her trail the field by a considerable distance for the majority of the event. Apprentice English advised stewards that the instructions were to ride the mare quietly out of the gates and obtain a position at the rear of the field. When questioned regarding the performance Apprentice Grylls stated that she was instructed to take up a position where the gelding was comfortable. She said that she was able to obtain a position at the rear of the field and despite putting her mount under pressure from the 800 metres, it was nevertheless disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Connections indicated that the gelding will now be sent for a spell.
