He added he was then unable to restrain the colt and his mount was inclined to hang out and overrace. A post race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the near foreleg and had a slow recovery rate.

Laid out under pressure in the straight and of the opinion it had come to the end of its prep. Trainer confirmed gelding would be sent for spell.

Overraced in the early stages. Stewards opened an inquiry into the handling of the horse. Of concern were the actions of apprentice Sewell and his lack of vigour from the 400m onwards. Apprentice Sewell explained that his instructions were issued by trainer Mr A. Jones, who indicated he did not believe that the horse would be comfortable on the rain affected track and in these conditions instructed apprentice Sewell to ensure he held the horse’s head up in an attempt to have it travel on the bridle. Fleming stated that the geldings form last preparation included a Metropolitan win and was strong outside its final start failure, on rain affected going, prior to a spell. Mr Fleming added the geldings first start this preparation, over the unsuitable 1200m, was pleasing before the gelding was disappointing second up when having to settle back and wide at Lismore, which was leader bias that day. He added that after complying with these instructions the mare finished the race off strongly and also stated that as the mare steps up in distance, he would expect it to be settling in a position closer to the lead.
