Over raced during the early stages. Stewards questioned Jockey E Ljung in relation to the seemingly poor performance. Jockey Ljung advised that after beginning well the gelding obtained a forward position however shortly after the start it commenced to over race and proved difficult to restrain until a point near the 700m. She added that from passing the 600m, the gelding commenced to weaken and in her opinion was most disappointing. When questioned as to the seemingly improved performance, Trainer J Pritchard stated that the colt was first up from a spell and had trialled well leading into today’s event and as such she anticipated a forward showing. Ms Pritchard added that the colt was not suited by firm tracks towards the end of its 2 year old campaign. Her explanation was noted.

Smith, rider of SHONECK AFFAIR, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift in leaving the 1300m when not sufficiently clear of CHOREOGRAPH, which resulted in that gelding being tightened for room, and causing jockey J. Byrne to take hold of that gelding at that point of the event and having to take evasive action to avoid the heels of SHONECK AFFAIR. When questioned regarding the improved performance, Trainer B Baldwin explained that the mare was having its first race start for his stable. He added that when ARC LIGHT first arrived at his stable he was advised that the mare had some poor racing characteristics which led to poor performances. He further added that these characteristics had improved under his care resulting in the mare performing well in 3 recent jump-outs.
