Questioned re: performance, App. noted filly having its first start and was still somewhat immature. Filly took a step back in the barriers just prior to the start which resulted in it missing the start by a considerable distance and then despite his efforts failed to muster speed in the early and middle stages due to the soft conditions. App. Hodge added that in the home straight he was able to shift the filly out where he felt the going was superior at which point it finished the race off well. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

When asked to comment on the improved performance of TRUSTY LAD as compared to its most recent start, trainer M. Kropp explained that the colt performed well at its first start at Toowoomba and made significant ground in the final stages of the race. He added that at its most previous start TRUSTY LAD may not have been suited racing inside horses and made its final run in the home straight on the inside which he felt was inferior ground. Mr Kropp added that today’s field was of a lesser grade than the race at Doomben on 21 July. His explanation was noted.

Cahill indicated it had been his intention to ride in a forward position, however after having been bumped by another runner at the start, the horse was unable to muster sufficient speed, and indicated that the stable is looking to step the horse up to races over longer distances.

As such rather than be caught wide he obtained cover following FRESPANOL, expecting that horse to maintain a forward position. Soon afterwards runners to the outside crossed FRESPANOL which resulted in his mount racing further back than he would have liked.
