Bounded on jumping as the start was effected and lost considerable ground. J Doyle reported that his mount was making an abnormal respiratory noise in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Hickman was advised that before being permitted to race or barrier trial, a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, must be produced.

He added the gelding was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off and the only explanation he could offer was it was not suited racing on the inside. Trainer Mr P Payne advised the Stewards that Husson Eagle had pleased since arriving in Sydney and was at a loss to explain today's performance. When able to lead and dictate in the early stages of today's event, whilst SWEET SERENDIPITY held a margin on his mount, he endeavoured to hold his position inside that runner in the best interest of his mount, bearing in mind his mount's history of hanging out in its races. He added that on straightening his mount was immediately on one rein and commenced to hang out and as a result could not be fully tested in the run to the finish.
