Rider questioned re tactics specifically strong tempo set early stages - stated instructed to lead and setgenuine tempo as gelding failed to finish off previous races when leading in slowly run races. Added passing 1200m when KICKSTART MY HEART attempted to cross forward he allowed DEVILS FIRE to improve to comply with instructions and maintain position to inside KICKSTART MY HEART, which subsequently resulted in strong tempo being set.

Coveney stated that the mare had been ridden forward at Gatton when it won in June and his instructions to all riders since then have been to ride the mare forward, however at its three previous starts the mare was unable to be ridden in that manner.

He stated the horse returned to the enclosure with its tongue over the bit and may have choked down. He also stated the horse may have come to the end of its preparation and that it was his intention to send it for a spell. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
