Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred near the 850m where GWAPO clipped the heels of BIMINI ROAD and blundered badly. HI FIVER, which was following, shifted out abruptly and lost ground. HI LIZZY, which was racing to the outside of HI FIVER, was bumped and forced wider, losing ground. Stewards established that approaching the 850m BIMINI ROAD had crossed all runners and assumed the position on the fence as apprentice M. Near the 250m and again leaving the 200m hampered by EFFECTIVE ASSASSIN which shifted out. When questioned as to the disappointing performance, Jockey M Hellyer was unable to offer any explanation. Stable representative for trainer B Smith expressed his disappointment in the filly’s performance and was also unable to offer any explanation. The stable undertook to report back to stewards in the days coming if any abnormalities present which explain the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of examination.

Jockey Rolls explained that the gelding failed to hold a position behind SNOW SPARKLE despite his urges. He added that the gelding raced greenly throughout and was under pressure from the 600m and would appreciate a step-up in distance. Stewards noted his explanation.

When quest tactics b/n 1200m & 800m, in particular leading event 4 wide & reducing speed which allowed other runners to improve to mounts inside & challenge lead passing 800m, rdr stated settled with cover early however mount travelled keenly & he improved to lead event. Rdr stated in middle stages he tried to give mount as soft a run as possible & when runners improved inside mount pass 800m it was under pressure. Rdr stated he raced wide as this was best going. P/R vet exam no ab's.

When qst rdr std his instr were to have horse ridden conservatively from its wide barrier & to ensure he brings mount to outside of field in home str to provide it with uninterrupted running. Mount was able to take up a pos at rear of field whereby it trav well throughout early & mid stgs. Added that on str, although a run did present itself, where he had the oppor to advance, bearing in mind instr, he continually directed his mount to outside appr 200m in an endeavor to obt clear running. A post race vet exam revealed gelding to have lost its off fore plate.
