When qst re mare settling further back today, rdr std, instr were to ride mount where comf, but had not anticipated taking up a fwd pos. Added, with mare coming back in distance today & when another rnr which was pos to his inside was able to go fwd, he elected to not make use of his mount & take up a trailing pos behind that rnr & consequently raced further back than anticipated.

Shifted in and made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced near the 400m when racing in restricted room to the inside of TOOGOOLAWAH TRUMP. Shifted out abruptly when racing greenly approaching the 100m, resulting in the rider having to stop riding and straighten. Bumped approaching the winning post.

National Trail

On return to scale, Apprentice N. Keal could offer no tangible explanation for the poor performance tonight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer T. Sears reported that when the horse returned to his stables it appeared to be distressed, and he advised that it may be the case that the horse has a virus. Mr Sears advised Stewards that he would have blood samples taken from the horse in the coming days, and would report any findings to Stewards.

Ridden forward to obtain the lead, and after passing the 1000m commenced to overrace and had a tendency to lay out rounding the home turn. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted today, jockey M. Hellyer advised that his instructions were to be positive out of the barriers and attempt to obtain a forward position. Trainer Mr P. Duff confirmed the instructions, however added that as the stallion had not raced for over a month and was on the fresh side it commenced to overrace and showed more speed than he had anticipated. Whilst noting his explanation, Mr Duff was nevertheless advised
