When questioned regarding the performance, apprentice A. Fancourt stated that after being caught wide in the early stages she elected to restrain her mount near the 1100m to obtain cover. She added that near the 600m she attempted to improve into the race and was obliged to race wide, and, in her opinion, the gelding did not appreciate racing on the tight turning circuit. Prior to the event, connections advised Stewards that it was the intention for the horse to be ridden in a forward position today if circumstances permit. After being slow into stride, the horse settled at the rear of the field. Apprentice M. Schrapel allowed his mount to stride forward to take up a more forward position when racing keenly near the 1200m, and as a result was forced to race 3 wide for the remainder of the event.

A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer P. Duncan confirmed the stable’s disappointment in the performance, however was unable to offer any explanation, and gave an undertaking to report back to stewards in the coming days of any abnormality that comes to light.

Stewards inquired into the reason for the mare being severely checked near the 300m. Whilst it was established that after passing the 400m a run had presented itself to the inside of STAR OF COLUMBIA, that horse weakened significantly and shifted in at a point near the 350m. This resulted in CAPE DENISON being disappointed for a run to the inside of that horse shortly after and caused apprentice Lacy to check the mare. Stewards could not attribute any blame to any rider and took no further action. Apprentice S. Lacy reported the horse had a minor laceration to the off foreleg post race.
