Raced 5 wide without cover. When asked to explain the tactics employed on the horse, jockey R. Stewart indicated he had been instructed from the wide barrier to attempt to obtain cover. He stated that when steading his mount in the early stages the gelding commenced to overrace and he was unable to obtain a position closer to the fence with cover. He added that near the 800m, after overracing, he elected to try to improve to the lead, however the horse then did not have sufficient pace to improve around the horses to his inside. Stewards asked trainer T. Miller to comment on the horse’s seemingly improved performance. He indicated that he has been quite pleased with the horse’s performance since returning from a significant spell. He added that in his opinion the horse had been working well and it has been the intention to allow the horse to lead in its races and he believes that the horse races best when able to lead without being challenged as in today’s event. He further added that today’s soft track and the step up to a mile were also factors which may have contributed to today’s performance.
