The start of this race was delayed when the horse had to be reshod in the tie-up stalls after losing its near hind plate. The start was further delayed when the gelding broke through the barriers prior to the start and galloped a short distance, however was quickly restrained, returned to the gates, examined by the veterinary surgeon and was found to have sustained a minor abrasion to the off side nostril, however was cleared to take its place in the field.

Correct weight was delayed to ascertain whether the horse afforded a fair start. Stewards ascertained that as the start was effected Lips ‘N Hips, which was being handled by a barrier attendant, reared as the gates opened, making contact with the overhead partition, losing considerable ground. Subsequently stewards found that the horse was not impeded by the attendant and declared the horse a starter. Apprentice jockey A. Sewel was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish line.
