Team Edmonds chasing more Magic Millions glory

Team Edmonds is hoping for more Magic Millions glory at the Gold Coast in January following Whypeeo’s effortless win at Doomben on Saturday.

Starting $1.16 favourite, Whypeeo led all the way to down Red Hot Miss by three lengths in the St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1110m).

Perfect Rain finished third, a further three-quarters of a length away.

Whypeeo, a son of I Am Invincible, was a $200,000 buy for Blue Sky Bloodstock at last year’s Magic Millions sales and has now won three of his four starts for a $99,000 return for connections.

Trainer Toby Edmonds was in Melbourne with stable star Houtzen who won the Magic Millions Classic in January and was represented by son, stable foreman Trent Edmonds.

“He controlled the race from the start so it was a good effort,” Edmonds said.

“He’ll go for a short let-up now and come back and get ready for the Magic Millions Guineas.”

The Edmonds stable is also chasing the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) with another son of I Am Invincible, the highly promising I Am Impinge.

I Am Impinge was a Maiden winner at Coffs Harbour in July before placings at his past two starts at Doomben.

“This guy is probably more brilliant than I Am Impinge but they’re both being set for the Magic Millions,” Edmonds said.

Team Edmonds was later out of luck with favourite Star Of Night in the Eileen and Williams Duffus Memorial Handicap (1200m).

Star Of Night finished second, beaten 2-1/4 length by the Mick Lakey-trained Final Zero with Of The Day, a long head away, third.

Final Zero was ridden by Jim Orman who was dislodged from the four-year-old mare after the winning post.

Orman, last season’s premier apprentice, was uninjured in the incident and was able to fulfil his commitments.

Final Zero, a son of Strategic, lived up to his previous form and was able to turn the tables on Of The Day after being runner-up to the Tony Gollan-trained mare at her two previous starts.
