Pony Power on target for Magic Millions

By Glenn Davis

Talented filly Pony Power staked an early claim to give trainer Chris Munce his first Magic Millions Classic as a trainer with a commanding victory at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Munce won the Magic Millions Classic three times during a distinguished riding career before retiring from the saddle two years ago.

Pony Power, a $100,000 purchase at the Magic Millions sales, proved to strong scoring by a head over Lady McCabe in the Vilis Family Baker Plate (900m).

Aetherius finished third, only a short neck away.

Pony Power is a daughter of Foxwedge out of Lonoree who is closely related to former Group 1 winner Denise’s Joy.

Foxwedge raced in elite company during his racing career and beat Buffering and Hay List in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley in 2012.

“She’s earned over $40,000 with this win so she should be qualified which means I can pick and choose her next races,” Munce said.

Munce was delighted with the filly’s final sectionals and the way she hit the line.

Pony Power clocked 51.88 seconds for the 900-metre dash which was 0.06 seconds quicker than You Know The One who caused an upset by winning the Membership At Aquis Plate (900m).

Trainer John Zielke was left stunned when You Know The One, ridden by Ryan Plumb, downed Brinkmanship by two lengths with a neck to Zielke’s other runner, Rains Aplenty.

“I’m stunned. I didn’t expect him to beat Rains Aplenty,” Zielke said.

“I only hope nothing is wrong with Rains Aplenty as he’s a lot better than that.”

You Know The One was bred by Zielke’s main owner Evan Hartley who bought the gelding’s mother Rosmerta in foal to English bred sire, Bullet Train.

“Bullet Train is a three-quarter brother to European champion Frankel and I encouraged Evan to buy the mother of You Know The One who was in foal to him for $3,000,” Zielke said.

You Know The One is ineligible for the Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January, a race Zielke hopes Rains Aplenty will contest.
