SUPPLEMENTARY

From Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting 4/2/2017 – Race 5

App J. Hodge the rider of SHE GOES POP pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR135(b) in that after obtaining a forward position in the early stages he failed to make sufficient effort to restrain his mount when setting a fast tempo throughout the middle stages leaving the 1000m and then when approaching the 600m, when it was reasonable for him to remain trailing WALTZ IN FLIGHT, he elected to shift out and improve from that point.  The tactics he adopted in the opinion of the stewards failed to give SHE GOES POP full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field. App Hodge was suspended from riding in races for a period of one (1) month to commence midnight 11 February 2017 and to expire midnight 11 March 2017.

App C. Bayliss the rider of WALTZ IN FLIGHT was found guilty of a charge under the provisions of AR135(b) in that after being ridden along in the early stages and obtaining the lead he continued to set a fast tempo throughout the middle stages between the 1100m and 600m when leading the remainder of the field by a considerable distance when it was reasonable and permissible for him to restrain WALTZ IN FLIGHT to allow that mare to finish the race off to the best of its ability.  The tactics App Bayliss adopted in the view of the stewards failed to give WALTZ IN FLIGHT full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field. App Bayliss was suspended from riding in races for a period of one (1) month to commence midnight 17 February 2017 and to expire midnight 17 March 2017.
RACE 1: FURNITURE COURT Maiden Plate – 1300m
1st: Eight Verses   2nd: Fusi Fox   3rd: Sea Route   4th:  Awesome More

WAR CHEST - Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination as the mare had not raced in over 14 months and was subsequently cleared to start.   A post race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 2: ULTIMATE GOLD COAST ANTIQUE FAIR Class 3 H’Cap – 1200m
1st: Redsson   2nd: Earnhart   3rd: Panch Kalyan   4th:  Generate

OSTERIA – Overraced badly in the early stages and near the 1000m was unable to be restrained by its rider R. Bishop and shifted out and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of EARNHART.  Continued to overrace in the middle stages and was allowed to stride forward.  Trainer B. Hudson was advised that the gelding must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again.  A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

EARNHART – Bumped heavily on the hind quarters leaving the 1100m and taken wider near the 900m and bumped on a number of occasions passing the 900m.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to a Good 3.

RACE 3: GOLD COAST EVENT CENTRE QTIS 2YO H’Cap – 900m
1st: Wicked Knickers   2nd: Miss Cochise   3rd: Princess Cavallo   4th:  She Salutes

The start was delayed when CRAIGLEA PATIENCE proved difficult to load.  Trainer K. Johnston was advised that the filly must obtain a further barrier certificate prior to racing again.

The start was further delayed when CRAIGLEA RIO had to have its bridle adjusted when being loaded.

SHE SALUTES – Slow to begin and then hampered soon after the start.

CRAIGLEA RIO – Jumped away awkwardly.  Raced greenly approaching and rounding the home turn.   After passing the 200m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of GOLD SUN, which shifted in when not quite clear.  Jockey M. Palmer (GOLD SUN) was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.

MISS COCHISE – Had to be restrained from the heels of CRAIGLEA PATIENCE near the 500m.  Held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight.

GOLD SUN – Obliged to alter course to the inside of CRAIGLEA PATIENCE approaching the 200m in order to improve.
ALPINE KING – Raced wide without cover throughout. When asked to comment on the performance of ALPINE KING jockey V. Johnston explained that when racing wide the gelding raced very greenly and will take benefit from the experience of today’s race.  Lost a near hind plate in running.

1st:Capital City   2nd: Nourishing   3rd: Duble Meaning   4th:  Boyd St Hawk

CRAIGLEA ZING – Slow to begin.  Hung in under pressure over the final 100m.

LI’L PIPPA – Jumped away awkwardly and shifted in shortly afterwards. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight until passing the 100m.  Jockey S. Bogenhuber reported at scale that LI’L PIPPA was obliged to race wide throughout and in her view would be better suited in races over further distances than that of today.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be suffering from mild heat stress.

BOYD ST HAWK – Near the 600m had to be steadied from the heels of CLOUT.

POSITIVE QUEST -  Near the 300m momentarily became awkward at the heels of STAGE LADY.

Trainer B. Lunney was issued with a reprimand for presenting DUBLE MEANING without a crossover nose band, which is part of the horse’s normal racing gear.

RACE 5: GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY STUDENT GUILD Class 1 H’Cap – 1200m
1st: Excalibrator   2nd:  Coomera   3rd: Our Rocky   4th:  Little Bita Love

OUR ROCKY and CREATIONIST were both examined by the veterinary surgeon behind the barriers when kicked by other runners and subsequently cleared to start.

SHEZA YANKEE – Slow to begin.  When questioned regarding the performance jockey Matthew Palmer stated that the filly failed to travel comfortably throughout and was reluctant to stretch out and proved most disappointing.  A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.  Stewards will interview trainers John & Chris Meagher regarding the performance.

COOMERA – When overracing had to be restrained from heels near the 800m.

LADY CAROLYN – Raced 3 wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to race outside the leader.  A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the off hind stifle.  Trainer J. Petersen was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to LADY CAROLYN racing again.

THAT SCHIMDT GIRL – Inconvenienced when taken wider near the 300m. Raced wide without cover throughout.

TIDE’S OUT – Inconvenienced when taken wider near the 300m.

CREATIONIST - Following the race managing part owner Mr Rolfe expressed disappointment with App C. Bayliss’ riding of CREATIONIST, particularly in the early stages where he trailed the field and also in the home straight where he had been given specific instructions to improve on the outside of the field.  When questioned App Bayliss stated that CREATIONIST could not muster speed in the early stages despite his efforts.  App Bayliss added that he attempted to improve from the 600m and although he had instructions to shift wider in the home straight and as he was still trailing the field, thought it would be more advantageous to improve to the inside rather than cover additional ground.  He further added that CREATIONIST finished the race off well and in his view would be better suited in races of further distance than that of today.  After viewing the patrol footage stewards accepted his explanation in that he was making an effort to get the horse to improve in the early stages and accepted his reason for not shifting wider on straightening.
