SUPPLEMENTARY

From Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting 7 January 2017

Stewards today concluded an inquiry into a report received from members of the Integrity Regulatory Unit regarding the possible treatment of Mr D. Kelly’s runners at this meeting.   Mr Kelly was today advised that swab samples taken from RED DECK, ALDINI, HI SON and UMGENI were reported by the Racing Science Centre to be free of prohibited substances.  Mr Kelly was subsequently fined $200 under part (5) of AR178 F(1) for failing to properly record the treatment of the abovementioned horses on the day prior to this particular meeting.

GENERAL

As jockey M. McGuren was indisposed due to transport difficulties stewards permitted rider changes as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

ALPINE KING – Approaching the 800m struck the heels of YOICHI when that runner was restrained.

App M. Murphy was cautioned for using his whip on ALPINE KING when out of contention.

RACE 2: Moco Meats Class 3 Plate – 1800m
1st: Lieder   2nd: Rosador   3rd: Positive Problems   4th:  Karakabeel

LEPRECHAUN LAD – Overraced in the early stages.

LIGHTNING BELL – Had to be checked approaching the 600m when tightened for room between SKYTREK and OUTSTRIP.

OUTSTRIP – When asked to explain the disappointing performance App A. Fancourt stated that she rode the gelding with cover and when she applied pressure in the home straight it did not respond to her riding.

SCARLET POET – When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on the mare today, which settled towards the rear of the field which is in contrast to its most recent starts, App T. Brooker explained that she had no specific instructions and after travelling a short distance was unable to muster speed and as a result settled at the rear of the field.  Trainer P. Overell stated that he was surprised SCARLET POET was unable to muster speed from the barrier and he attributed this to the mare having blinkers removed today.  Mr Overell further added that he will consider removing the cross over nose band from SCARLET POET in future starts.

THREE POINTS – Stewards questioned A. Spinks regarding the reason for him leaving a trailing position behind SPIRIT OF KIOWA approaching the 1400m and electing to improve 3 wide to the outside of that runner.  Jockey Spinks explained that THREE POINTS is one paced and when the pace steadied approaching the 1400m he moved forward 3 wide to the outside of SPIRIT OF KIOWA and near the 1200m he attempted to shift that runner to the rail and obtain a position trailing ENDLESS DON.  Jockey Spinks added that when SPIRIT OF KIOWA remained one off the fence he was forced to race 3 wide for the remainder of the event.  Trainer G.Duncan confirmed that THREE POINTS is one paced and he was not that dissatisfied with the tactics adopted by jockey Spinks.  Mr Duncan added that in his view the gelding did not race well on today’s rain affected track.  Stewards advised jockey Spinks that in their opinion he had erred by leaving a trailing position behind SPIRIT OF KIOWA near the 1400m however, were of the view that his riding was not so unreasonable as to be culpable under the Rules.

Trainer K. Hickmott was fined $200 for presenting LEPRECHAUN LAD to race in plates which were in an unsatisfactory condition and required farrier attention.

Following the running of this event jockey G. Colless was stood down for the remainder of the day and replaced as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

RACE 4: Simplot Foodservices BenchMark 75 H’Cap – 900m
1st: Moshki   2nd: Aimalac Millie   3rd: Live Fast   4th:  Alpine Dragon

The start of the race was delayed when EXCELARTIE became fractious in the barrier and reared and struck App T. Brooker in the face.  App Brooker was subsequently cleared to take her ride.

The start was further delayed when SASSY TYCOON proved difficult to load.  Trainer M. Eggleston was advised that the mare must obtain a further barrier certificate prior to its next start.

SASSY TYCOON – Jumped very awkwardly and lost ground.

GO BETTER – Hampered at the start.

EXCELARTIE – Began very awkwardly, shifted out and lost considerable ground.  App T. Brooker explained that after losing ground at the start the gelding did not travel at any stage despite her urgings and trailed the field throughout the event. Trainer L. Garrett undertook to report to stewards anything that may come to light in the coming days that would explain today’s performance.

DYLAN’S LUCK – Had to be steadied near the 800m from the heels of PERDU, which was inclined to lay in away from THOMAS THE TANK.  When afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance jockey J. Byrne stated that in his opinion the gelding raced flat today and failed to respond when placed under pressure in the home straight and proved disappointing.

PERDU – Approaching the 600m had to be eased when tightened for room between LIVE FAST and THOMAS THE TANK, which shifted in slightly.

L. Cassidy the rider of SHOREHAM pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1000m mark he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of COLOUR CHARGE, which was taken in onto HI SON, which was tightened for room and taken in across the heels of TRANSPORTER and as a result had to be checked. L. Cassidy was suspended from riding in races for a period of nine (9) days to commence midnight 19 March 2017 and to expire midnight 28 March 2017.

SIR MOMENTS – When asked to explain the performance of the gelding D. Browne stated that with the fast tempo he settled back in the field and when he went to make a run from the 600m SIR MOMENTS did not quicken as expected, which he attributed to the fast tempo and the handicap weight of 61 kilos.
