JINX ‘N’ DRINX – Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Raced wide when attempting to obtain the lead until approaching the 600m. A. Spinks reported that in his opinion the overall performance was affected by the amount of work the horse was obliged to do in the early stages to obtain the lead.

Race 3: KIA-ORA TANAWHA DEVELOPMENTS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP 1800M

FAST ARROW – T. Harrison reported that it had not been her intention to race in a forward position, however when the pace was very slow in the early stages and she was caught wide, she elected to allow the gelding to stride forward to a position outside the lead passing the 1300m.

MUKADDAMAH SON – Raced wide without cover from the 800m and forced wider again from the 600m. Lost the near fore plate in running.

RISING LUCK – Trainer T. Thomas advised that it would be the intention to have the horse ridden back in the field. After being slow to begin the horse was ridden accordingly.

CALL ME RUSTY – Stewards questioned apprentice C. Bayliss in relation to the riding tactics he adopted on the horse, which obtained the lead easily in the early stages and was then restrained when the pace was very , which allowed MARAU DAZE to cross near the 1500, which resulted in CALL ME RUSTY overracing in the middle stages. Apprentice Bayliss indicated that he had been advised that the connections anticipated the horse leading and he was also of the view that the horse would lead the event, however, after having been questioned in relation to allowing one of his mounts at the Gold Coast on 4 February to race too hard in the early and middle stages, he was reluctant to continue to lead for fear that this would occur again. Stewards advised apprentice Bayliss that in their opinion, when given instructions, he should attempt to comply with those instructions where circumstances permit, and in this situation he had erred in failing to remain in the lead, however given the horse’s finishing effort and given that this was apprentice Bayliss’ first race ride over today’s distance of 1800m and taking into account his relative inexperience, stewards took no further action.

DRUMMERS CHANCE – Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn and again in the early stages of the home straight. Stewards asked N. Day to comment on the horse’s performance. He stated that after beginning awkwardly, the horse lost further ground when he momentarily lost the use of an iron, which took a short distance to regain. He indicated that he would have liked to have been in a more forward position, however the horse did not muster early speed. He added that the horse finished the race off strongly and in his opinion would be suited to racing over a further distance than that of today’s event.

TOBACCO ROAD – Became awkward on jumping, almost dislodging L. Tarrant. Raced wide without cover.
