Race 7: THE COMPASS INSTITUTE CLASS 2 H'CAP – 2200M

BOLD AND GROOVY – Stewards questioned apprentice C. Bayliss regarding his tactics adopted in the early stages which resulted in him being caught three wide despite having drawn barrier 3. He indicated that he had, pre-race, intended to cross behind the two runners to his inside, being WHAT’S THAT and JOUEUR. He indicated that after beginning fairly he felt he would be able to cross behind those two horses, however both RUBY GURU and THORNETT had crossed behind him during the early stages and improved to his inside. He further explained that after passing the 1600m he felt that WHAT’S THAT may have been able to shift to the fence at that point as he was of a view that RUBY GURU may steady at that point of the race and as this did not occur he was obliged to race three wide throughout. Stewards advised apprentice Bayliss that in similar circumstances he would be expected to make more of an effort to attempt to secure a position close to the fence in the early stages, particularly in distance races, and that when he found himself then in a three wide position passing the 1700m he would be expected to make an effort to go forward or steady and go back in the field in order to secure a position close to the fence. Whilst stewards believed that these were errors, they felt that as apprentice Bayliss had only recently been upgraded to a provincial class of licence no further action should be taken.

THORNETT – Had some difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn.

WAR FRONT – Slow to begin. Raced wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to take up a position outside the lead passing the 1700m.
