Race 2: ALEX SURF CLUB C,G&E CLASS 4 H'CAP – 1200M

The start of this race was delayed when both THE INFLAMER and KEEP ON ROCKING became fractious in the barriers. After being removed and undergoing veterinary examinations, THE INFLAMER was cleared to start and KEEP ON ROCKING was declared a late scratching at 2:56 pm on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on KEEP ON ROCKING be refunded, with deductions of 16 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets.

Race 4: NORTH COAST FOODS F&M CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1400M

I CAN’T SEE WHO – J. Orman reported to stewards that he was disappointed with his mount’s overall performance as the horse had obtained a favourable position outside the lead and did not let down as expected in the home straight.

HIDDEN GOLD – Stewards questioned M. Hellyer regarding the tactics he adopted in the event as HIDDEN GOLD led, which is in contrast to its established racing pattern. He indicated that it had been his intention to settle midfield just behind the lead if possible, however after beginning well he elected to attempt to sit outside SOL WITNESS, however when that horse was steadied leaving the 1200m he elected to allow his mount to stride forward, as he had been advised that the horse can overrace, and he established the lead near the 1000m. Stewards noted the explanation.

SOL WITNESS – Stewards questioned B. Grylls regarding the tactics she adopted in the middle stages when she steadied her mount after having secured the lead, which resulted in her being in a trailing position. She stated that approaching the 1200m she did not wish to have to pressure her horse to hold the lead when HIDDEN GOLD improved to her outside so she elected to steady and allow that runner to cross. She added that shortly thereafter RED CHANDELIER improved to a position inside her heels and she was obliged to settle in the position one off the fence. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 5: SEA FM CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M

The start of this race was delayed when CANTON ROAD refused to load. CANTON ROAD was declared a late scratching at 4:48 pm. Trainer M. Mair was advised that the horse will be required to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to being permitted to race again. Following the event, stewards ordered that all monies invested on CANTON ROAD be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

DO I HAVE TO – Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. J. Orman reported that in his opinion the filly was travelling well into the home straight and then received a significant bump from another runner and after this failed to stretch out and was disappointing over the concluding stages.

EPICTION – Raced wide without cover. Buffeted over the concluding stages.

SUMO ESPRIT – Late scratching at 5:08 pm following advice from trainer B. Robinson that due to traffic congestion the horse would be unable to arrive on course in time for the event.

BUNGLE BOORI – M. Hellyer said that the mare did not muster early speed, was at the tail of the field, and when pressured from the 600m commenced to hang out. He added that when placed under heavy pressure from the 400m the horse changed stride and raced more tractably and although having some difficulty securing clear running when improving on to the heels of weakening runners, finished the race off nicely and was doing its best work over the concluding stages. He indicated that the horse would be much more suited to races over 1400m and beyond where it will have the opportunity to take up a forward position.
