He indicated that after beginning fairly he had been instructed to obtain a position in the forward half of the field. Near the 1200m he looked to obtain cover one off the fence, however was unable to do so and when in a 3 wide position coming to the first turn elected to ride forward and take up the lead. He indicated that clear running had presented itself to the inside of YALLAROII he elected to remain to the inside, and he was also of the view to remain to the inside as he felt he would continue to be able to improve, which he did so until approaching the 200m when held up behind the weakening MUMFORD.. He then shifted out in an attempt to obtain clear running and continued to be held up until near the 150m. Stewards noted his explanation.

DISTROYIA Improved onto heels near the 500m andd shifted wider on the track to improve. Then laid in under pressure in the home straight.

THE GRINGO Raced wide without cover.

REAL CLASSIC Rider J. Byrne was questioned as to the tactics he adopted. Of concern to stewards was a section of the race between the 600m and 400m when whilst following THE GRINGO, which commenced to weaken, jockey Byrne elected to improve to the inside of that horse when it appeared he had an opportunity to improve around THE GRINGO.. He explained that at this point he had initially thought that THE GRINGO might maintain its position until entering the home straight, however when it became apparent the horse was commencing to weaken he elected to attempt to improve on the back of UNCHARTED, which had shifted out to the inside of THE GRINGO, forcing that horse wider. When attempting to secure this run his mount was somewhat impeded when BLOOMERANG shifted awayy from the fence to improve.. He further added that after straightening he was placed in restricted room and buffeted between BLOOMERANG, which shifted out again, and THE GRINGO, which was taken in by DISTROYIA, which was laying in at the time.. After taking into account jockey Byrnees explanation, stewards were satisfied that a run had presented itself to the inside of THE GRINGO, however had it not been for other runners altering course when rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight, jockey Byrne would have had an uninterrupted run to the line.. Stewards therefore accepted the explanation, however advised jockey Byrne that, in their opinion, with hindsight it may have been a better option to shift to the outside of THE GRINGO approaching the 500m.
