When questioned, J. Doyle stated that whilst he would have appreciated being further forward in the early stages, the gelding nonetheless did not sprint when placed under pressure and was very disappointing. Trainer D. Beadman’s stable representative advised that FEDERAL may be sent for a spell.

Raced wide without cover. Performed disappointingly. O. Bosson reported that his mount never travelled well and was under pressure from the 800m. Co-trainer J. Richards could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance and undertook to report back to stewards the results of blood tests which will be taken on Monday. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
