It shapes as a State of Origin battle on Sunday.

A big team of Queensland based trainers are heading across the state border in a bid to qualify their runners for the time honoured Golden Guitar Final.

The feature meeting at Tamworth which is part of the Carnival of Cups for Harness Racing New South Wales has grown rapidly in recent years.

It’s also part of the famous Tamworth country music festival.

Heats are scheduled for Sunday while the Listed $25,500 final is scheduled for Thursday (January 24).

A total of four heats will be staged over the 1980m distance.

The track is 750m in circumference.

Queensland trainers competing this Sunday night include Lola and Stacey Weidemann, Trevor Lambourn, Darrel Graham, Graham Dwyer, Peter Greig, Ricky Gordon, Tayla Gillespie, Lacey Hinze, Kay Crone, David Russel and Tim Gillespie.

A total of 39 Queensland horses are listed to start at the Sunday night meeting.

Leading reinsmen Pete McMullen and Nathan Dawson are also heading south to take a number of drives.

Queensland trained winners of the Golden Guitar include Goldplay (2014) and Tiger Island (2012).

Last year, the feature was taken out by Redbelly Jack for Michael and Nathan Xuereb.
