Young Tasmanian trainer Aiden Nunn is eyeing a homestate Cups campaign with Brilliant Jet after the gelding gave him his first Saturday metropolitan Queensland winner at Doomben on Saturday.

Brilliant Jet, who has won in four States, had too much class over his rivals downing Ruling Dynasty by a half neck in the Open Handicap (2200m).

Nunn, 31, is based at Longford in northern Tasmania but travels the polo circuit each winter in his quest to make the Australian Polo team.

“I’ve been training thoroughbreds for about five or six years and I’ve trained polo horses ever since I left school but I’ve only played the last five years,” Nunn said.

“I want to play polo as much as I can until the body gives up then hopefully training racehorses will take over.

“I got in the Australian squad last year but I missed out on the World Cup as I had lost a bit of confidence after breaking my leg the previous year.”

Brilliant Jet won last year’s Devonport Cup and Nunn wants to aim for back-to-back wins in the Tasmanian feature.

“There’s not too much around for him in Queensland so he’ll probably go to Sydney next as I’ll be there for up to six weeks in October,” he said.

“Ultimately he’ll run again in the Devonport Cup and then the Launceston and Hobart Cups next year.”

Earlier it was a case of the two Murphy’s when Archer’s Paradox claimed the QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap (1050m).

Archer’s Paradox is trained at Eagle Farm by David Murphy and was well ridden by apprentice Michael Murphy.

David Murphy only has a small team in work and was successful with Stellacraft at Ipswich on July 20.

“I don’t think there’s many two-year-old’s who can go with her early but the funny thing is her best win was at Ipswich when she missed the start,” David Murphy said.

The daughter of Golden Archer shared the lead before kicking on straightening for a decisive 1-1/4 length win over the fast finishing Archade.

Defence Missile was a similar margin away third.

Archer’s Paradox’s win ended a long Saturday city drought for David Murphy.

Archer’s Paradox was a $18,000 buy at last year’s Magic Millions March sale at the Gold Coast and the win was her second in six starts which boosted her prizemoney to almost $56,000.

Golden Archer was placed at Group 1 level for former champion trainer Peter Moody and now stands at Queensland’s Raheen Stud on the famous Darling Downs at Warwick.

Raheen stud principal Basil Nolan was delighted with the result as Golden Archer sired both first and second for his 10th individual winner this season.
