IN REVIEW: Super Night at Albion Park

In remarkable scenes at the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club, the Steve White-trained Sennachie has smashed the 520m track record to win the $375,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Brisbane Cup. 

For the first time on a Queensland greyhound track, half-a-million dollars went on the line, with the riches being shared between local industry stalwarts and some of the big guns from south of the border. 

The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club put on a wonderful night of activities inlcuding a light and laser show that was the talk of the crowd.

RACE 1 - TAB LIGHTNING FINAL (331M) 

1st - Farmor Fear This - Steven Scott

2nd - Go Alice Go - Roan Enright

3rd - Data Base - Reg Hazelgrove 

Leading Brisbane trainer Steve Scott has kicked off Super Night with a bang as Farmor Fear This crossed his rivals to win the TAB Lightning (331m) from Box 8. 

Scott has a number of key chances on the richest night in Queensland racing history and a big contingent of supporters nearly brought down the Albion Park grandstand after the win. 

"We'll give it our best. I've got all my workers and parents here tonight so it's awesome," he said. 

Farmor Fear This made it three wins on the bounce over the 331m at Albion Park in taking the $15,000 Final. 

"About 380m or 390m would probably pull him up but this was the perfect distance and once he led he was going to be hard to beat," Scott said.

RACE 2 - SKY RACING THUNDER FINAL (395M)

1st - Farmor On Fire - Steven Scott

2nd - Nan's Magic - Travis Elson

3rd - Sly Gambler - Pat Lavis 

Steven Scott has enjoyed a dream start to Super Night at Albion Park, taking the second feature of the evening with Farmor On Fire. 

Drawn to perfection in Box 1, Farmor On Fire stepped a little slower than usual before rallying along the inside to take the Sky Racing Thunder. 

"You couldn't ask for anything better could you?" Scott said. 

"Both dogs (Farmor Fear This and Farmor On Fire) were boxed to perfection."

Scott will later box the $2.50 equal favourite, Stevick in the BGRC Chairman's over 710m.

"I'd just like to see him get around the corner un-touched," Scott said.

"He's got a big future as a stayer but we'll just see how we go tonight." 

RACE 3 - SKY RACING NOVICE - (520M)

1st - Kiss An' Roll - Jeff Crawford 

2nd - Logan Belle - Peter Evans

3rd - Morris The Great - Keiron  Butler

Kiss An' Roll has taken the Sky Racing Novice for Buccan trainer Jeff Crawford in 30.19sec. 

"She ran home in 12.71sec (when third) last week so was good to se her improve and go 12.67sec this week," he said. 

"She's strong at the back end of her races and if she can get to the top like she did tonight she'll be hard to catch (in the future)." 

Crawford said the he expects the 29-month old bitch to get out to the 600m trip down the track. 

Kiss An' Roll continued a run of good form for her litter, with sister Redeal (Fabregas x Reshuffle) winning the Novice at Albion Park last Thursday.

Despite a sluggish beginning the odds-on favourite Logan Belle (9) rallied late to finish second ahead of Morris The Great (3). 

RACE 4 - TAB NOVICE FINAL (520M) 

1st - Stinger Noir - Selena Zammit

2nd - Certification - Greg Stella

3rd - Spookie Vision - Tony Brett 

The Selena Zammit trainer Stinger Noir (2) has won the TAB Novice Final after over-taking the speedy Certification before the home turn. 

Certification showed his customary dash to find the early lead but Stinger Noir stalked him all the way to finish the 520m trip in 30.08sec. 

Kennel Rep Mick Zammit said Stinger Noir was a raw but promising greyhound. 

"He's starting to learn how to race and we're very happy with him," he said. 

"We thought the way we were drawn we would get a good run on the fence but we didn't know whether we could win it ... we're very happy." 

Spookie Vision held off a later challenge from Jimary Turbo to grab third for Tony Brett. 

RACE 5 - GARRARD'S CHALLENGE (600M) 

1st - Infrared Star - Joanne Price 

2nd - Elusive Star - Brian Baker

3rd - Kendall - Robin Palmer

Infrared Star (1) defied a late betting drift to thump his rivals for trainer Joanne Price in the Garrard's Challenge (600m) at Albion Park. 

Tipped by many as the best bet on the program, Infrared Star jumped to an early lead and never looked in danger. 

Kennel rep Jason Aylward said he used the red box perfectly. 

"We were worried because he's never had Box 1 out of the 600 and wants to use a little bit of the track when he's been in the 7 and 8," he said. 

Aylward said he was thrilled to be part of the new $500,000 Super Night. 

"These races are great. The 331m and 395m is what everyone (in the industry) needs."

It was a blanket finish for the minors with Elusive Star (2nd) and Kendall (3rd) completing the trifecta. 

RACE 6 - BGRC CHAIRMAN'S CUP (710M)

1st - Infrared Lad - Joanne Price 

2nd - Stevick - Steve Scott

3rd - Flyaway Barb - Craig Cassidy 

The Joanne Price Kennel has brought up a race-to-race double with Infrared Lad bolting in the BGRC Chairman's Cup at Albion Park. 

It was also a race-to-race double for the Bella Infrared x Vixen Lass litter, after Infrared Star saluted in the Garrard's Challenge. 

"They're going really good," Kennel rep Jason Aylward said. 

"They're not strong distance races and they're doing everything they need to do at the moment."

Stevick battled home into second, continuing another great night for trainer Steven Scott. Flyaway Barb finished third.  

RACE 7 - GARRARD'S SPRINT (520M) 

1st - Regal Recall - Tony Brett

2nd - Fabwik - Steve White

3rd - Brandi Alexander - Tom Tzouvelis

Has Tony Brett sounded an ominous warning ahead of the Group 1 Sky Racing Brisbane Cup Final? 

The Hall of Fame Trainer has taken out the Garrard's Sprint (520m) with Rockhampton Cup winner Regal Recall (Box 7). 

"It was a good win to bounce back. He was nicely drawn out in the centre and got a clear run," Brett said. 

"Dam Slippery crashed to the rail it took care of her and a few others. If he positions up close he's nice and strong. I gave him a chance down the back and he came home good."

Brett will now be chasing his seventh Winter Group 1 sprint in the space of nine years when he boxes the favourite Black Opium from Box 8. 

RACE 8 - SKY RACING BRISBANE CUP - GROUP 1 (520M)

1st - Sennachie - Steve White 

2nd - Black Opium - Tony Brett 

3rd - Nangar Diva - Dennis Barnes 

In remarkable scenes at the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club, the Steve White-trained Sennachie has smashed the 520m track record to win the $375,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Brisbane Cup. 

Luckless in the Flying Amy Classic, Sennachie bounced back to win his heat last week in 30.06sec. 

Jumping from Box 2 the Fawn Dog by Fernando Bale rocketed out of the boxes to take the early lead, which he never surrendered. 

White was overcome with emotion following the win and, who could blame him, with $250,000 going to the winning connections. 

"I'm ecstatic," White said. 

"Last week was a good run and I said he'd be better this week. He's won it really well he had to lead and now they tell me he's run a track record, that's just phenomenal. 

"I've always said he's one of the best dogs coming up.

"He's got the world at his feet ... he loves this track ... they'd want to put on a few more races worth $250,000 to the winner!" 

The $2.50 favourite Black Opium couldn't match motors early with Sennachie but fought on to scored a well-deserved second. 

The Dennis Barnes-trained Nangar Diva was also brave running third. 

RACE 9 - BEST WISHES MARG LONG (520M)

1st - Belvedere Babe - Renald Attard

2nd - Zipping Clark - Malcolm Ross 

3rd - Alpha Chaos - James Heddles 

Trainer Renald Attard said: “I thought she’d get a good trail over from the 7, but she ended up settling a bit further back than I’d have wanted. That was a big effort to make up the lengths she did on the home turn and she’s eligible for another Master’s next week.”

RACE 10 - SKY RACING 4/5 GRADE (520M)

1st - Chief Fernando - Desmond Cecil 

2nd - Smart Marlow - Ray Burman 

3rd - Ironbar Ricky - Ross Ogden

Chief Fernando continued the trend of fast times on Super Night at Albion Park when winning the Mixed 4/5 grade in 29.93sec.

The talented youngster made light work of his rivals, holding off four-year-old veteran Smart Marlow. 

Trainer Des Cecil was more than impressed with the win. 

“He’s turned into a high quality dog in a short space of time. He’s consistently breaking 30 and when we was challenged today came away from them. I might have to start looking at some bigger goals.”

RACE 11 - SKY RACING GRADE 5 (520M) 

1st - Patient Wally - Clint Kratzmann 

2nd - Nikki Nettle - Darryl McGrath

3rd - Suen's Boy - Alex Green 

Patient Wally sent favourite backers home with a smile following the last at Albion Park on Super Night but not without a few nervous moments. 

A late dive from the flying Nikki Nettle put the judge to the test before the Number 2 was put in the frame. 

Trainer Clint Kratzmann said despite the nervous moments he was thrilled to get the win. 

“He’s the first dog I’ve trained and that’s his and my first win on a Thursday night I’m rapt. He’s a quick dog but doesn’t have much stamina, I had my heart in my mouth up the straight but he got there and will only get stronger.”
