This year there were seven entries into the Off The Track (OTT) Bonus at the North Queensland Barrel Racing Club (NQBRC) Futurity held on 23 June 2019.  The OTT Bonus is awarded to the fastest three off the track horses of the day. The NQBRC created this bonus as a way to promote the talent and athleticism of the Thoroughbred and showcase careers in barrel racing for horses retired from the track.

The seven OTT competitors were riding for a total prizemoney of $1170. Racing Queensland was proud to support these off the track horses as one of the sponsors of this event, which was also supported by donations from local trainers and jockeys.

The 2019 OTT Bonus winner was Tullagrie Prince (pictured below), a 9yo gelding who was trained by Townsville’s Carol Hurle.  Affectionately known as Frank, he crossed the line with his Junior owner, Demi Kelly, in a blistering time of 19.46.  This pair are a very competitive team often winning and placing throughout the region in barrel racing and horse sports.

Second place was won by the big grey 10yo gelding, Athabasca (pictured below).  Trained by Olivia Cairns during his racing life, Athabasca won over $40,000 as a racehorse. He is now owned by Stephanie Thomson and the pair regularly compete in barrel racing and horse sports.  Athabasca and Stephanie stopped the clock with a time of 20.490, which also made them the winners of the 3D in the Open Divisional Barrel Race.

In third place was Shark N Beauty, a 7yo mare who was trained by Gareth Horner from Atherton and had won over $30,000 on the track.  The big mare is now owned by Apprentice Jockey Rachel Shred and has only been off the track for one month. The pair crossed the line with a time of 21.020

Fraidso, a 9yo mare who was trained by Bowen trainer Andrew Cameron and won over $50,000 on the track, came in with a time of 21.470 and was just out of the money.  She is now owned by the Major Sponsor of the NQBRC Futurity, Des Viero of Burdekin Veterinary Services and was ridden by Des’ daughter Gianna.

The oldest of them was Pikestaff who is a 17yo chestnut gelding.  He was trained by KS Sorensen of Winton.  Owned and ridden by Jenny Bulmer, the pair are a regular team at the NQBRC events and in the Divisional Barrel race had a time of 23.50.

Exaggeration is a 10yo gelding owned and trained by local trainer/veterinarian Margaret Preston, who won over $35,000 during his racing career.  Exaggeration was ridden by Margaret’s daughter Bree for a time of 20.12 but unfortunately knocked two drums which put him out of the prizemoney.

Dazzling Pride came in with a time of 33.22 seconds but unfortunately knocked a drum.  The 7yo grey gelding was trained by Roy Chilllemi from Cairns and his career included eight wins and over $70,000 in prizemoney.
