Talented New Zealander The Bostonian collected his second Stakes win of the Brisbane winter carnival with a commanding win in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas on Saturday.

Jockey Michael Cahill produced a master class performance on The Bostonian who travelled off the speed throughout before letting down for a  three-quarter length win over Bold Assassin.

Go Dixie, who made a sweeping run mid-race to take over lead, held on bravely for third.

It was New Zealand’s fourth win in the Sunshine Coast Guineas since its inception in 1995 following Atapi (2005), Shenzhou Steeds (2011), and Tivaci (2016).

Cahill is unbeaten in three rides on The Bostonian after claiming the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes and a three-year-old race at Doomben earlier this month.

The Bostonian is a son of former star Kiwi galloper Jimmy Choux and was having only his second start over 1600 metres after finishing sixth in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton in November.

Jimmy Chioux was New Zealand’s champion three-year-old and Horse Of The Year in 2010-11 and started in 15 Group 1 races in his 26-start career.

Among his five Group 1 wins were the New Zealand Derby and Rosehill Guineas in 2011 while he was also runner up in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

Trainer Tony Pike has a big opinion of The Bostonian who has won six of his nine starts and plans to spell him immediately ahead of a spring campaign.

“It’s a step up to go to Sydney or Melbourne but he’s done what we wanted so he deserves his chance,” Pike said.

Meanwhile trainer Kelly Schweida had a successful day with a double in the opening two races.

Schweida won the Istyle TV Benchmark 75 Handicap (1400m) with Bluebrook before Shogun Son proved too strong in the Glovers Concreting Benchmark 75 Handicap (1400m).

Schweida is likely to aim Bluebrook for the Grafton Guineas (1600m) after the gelding scored by three-quarters of a length over Bon Rocket.

The son of Hinchenbrook won his maiden at the Gold Coast in May and was unlucky at his subsequent two starts at the Sunshine Coast and Ipswich.

“There’s little doubt he should have won his last two runs and It was a good strong win today,” Schweida said.

“He shouldn’t have a problem getting 1600 metres so the Grafton Guineas might suit him.”
