Versatility is the name of the game for the Peter Wilson trained Brother Desy as the greyhound shoots for his fifth victory in a row over what would be three separate distances in the Manly Hotel Publican’s Cup Heat tomorrow night.

In the form of his career Brother Desy’s last four runs consist of two wins up the straight at Capalaba and two over his preferred distance of 600 at Albion Park, including a nine length romp nine days ago.

Brother Desy’s form isn’t quite as sparkling over the 520 but trainer Peter Wilson said it was as good an opportunity as ever with the form he was in.

“He’s in a pretty hard race the box isn’t ideal (four) but he’s fit and well and probably racing in the best form of his career so we had to give him a go,” Wilson said.

“He seems to be coming out a little better than he had earlier in his career, which has given him a chance over the 600 at Albion and the straight at Capalaba, but there’s a few speedsters in the 520 tomorrow night so he’ll need to be a his best.”

With a 600 metre race also on the card Thursday night Wilson said it was the lure of the Publican’s Cup to test him in a heat rather than contest a more winnable race over his preferred distance.

“We just thought we’d like a runner in the Publican’s Cup, we’ve had runners in the last few years and this fellow is showing the form at the moment to have a go at that,” he said.

“With eight heats and only the winners going through, we’re just hoping he can jump again because if he gets towards the front he’s got that strong 600 form.”

While a Publican’s Cup Final birth is the next target Wilson knows he’s got a talented chaser in Brother Desy’s and is confident his form will continue.

“He’s a very strong dog, in his nature, probably the strongest I’ve had in a lot and lot of years, within himself he’s just so calm and happy, he’s a good one,” he said

“600 is definitely his trip and if he doesn’t make the final we’ll definitely look to find him a race around that distance and cash in while he’s in form.”

Veteran trainer Wilson said it was his long term contacts in the industry that landed him Brother Desy along with a very handy half brother.

“Peter Sullivan bred him, we’ve been in with Peter for quite a number of his dogs, he’s half brothers with It’s Dyllan who’s been a great dog for us,” he said.

“We’ve always had a good relationship with Peter, he’s the happy owner of Brother Desy and always backs you in to do what’s best for his dogs, so it’s been a good partnership.”

The Wilson kennel is in good nick at the moment bagging a number of winners over recent meetings.

“Tahbilk won on Monday night over the 600, Bay of Major won at Capalaba on Saturday and so did Brother Desy, so we can’t complain we’re going pretty well at the moment, but a win tomorrow night would top it off.”
