Racing Queensland advises that the Cairns Jockey Club race meeting today, Monday, March 14, has been abandoned.

Earlier this morning, the track was inspected and declared suitable for racing on, however the significant amount of rain which has subsequently fallen has resulted in surface water on the track.

As a consequence, the track has been deemed unsafe for racing on following a further track inspection.

In accordance with its Race Meeting Abandonment Compensation Policy, there will be compensation payable to trainers (on behalf of owners) and riders with engagements at the meeting.

As a further consequence of the abandonment and given that there is no possibility that the meeting can be rescheduled in its entirety, RQ had added two races to the respective programmes for the Innisfail Turf Club race meeting on Saturday, March 19, and the Cairns Jockey Club meeting on Saturday, March 26:

Innisfail Turf Club – Saturday, March 19

  • Open Handicap, 1200m, $14,000; and
  • 3YO Maiden Handicap, 900m, $16,000 plus QTIS Bonuses.

Nominations for these two races specifically will close at 9am tomorrow, Tuesday, March 15.
