Tambo’s Mate laid the foundation for another big TAB Queensland Summer Racing Carnival for champion trainer Tony Gollan after claiming the Listed Keith Noud Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

Tambo’s Mate, rated to perfection by Ryan Maloney, gave Gollan his fifth win in the summer carnival pipe opener powering home to down early leader Stampe in the 1200-metre feature.

Stablemate Baller flashed home late to boost his summer prospects with an eye-catching third.

Tambo’s Mate was the third leg of a winning treble for Gollan, who has Brisbane's premier trainer for the past eight years, dominating many a summer carnival along the way.

Tambo’s Mate had raced only three times previously for Gollan after transferring from Stu Kendrick at Caloundra.

The six-year-year-old son of Mossman ran fourth in the Listed Weetwood Stakes at Toowoomba in his second start for the Eagle Farm trainer before snatching a last stride win over 1060 metres at Doomben last month.

Gollan made a late decision to start Tambo’s Mate in the Keith Noud after he had a jump out at Doomben last week.

“It was never the plan to be here today,” Gollan said.

“I had the Swiss Ace next week at Caloundra in the back of my mind and there’s some nice races coming up in Sydney that could suit him.

“I was a bit worried about going to 1200 metres as opposed to the 1000 metres in the Swiss Ace.

“He had a jump out last Tuesday and Ryan thought it was a bit plain.

“I must admit though I thought I had stuffed up running him today.”

Gollan plans to run both Tambo’s mate and Baller in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes over 1200 metres next month.

“It’ll be 21 days between runs for Tambo’s Mate which is ideal and Baller had the flashing light on for the George Moore in three weeks," he said.

“He (Baller) has a big summer ahead.”

Gollan, who is again a runaway leader in the Brisbane trainers’ premiership, was excited about his stable’s summer prospects.

“We’ve got a really good team for the summer this year and hopefully winning this race is just the start of things to come.”

Gollan won his first Keith Noud with Listen Son in 2011.
