Racing Queensland advises stakeholders of changes to the Grading Procedures.

1. Dropping A Grade

Greyhounds 48 months and older will be eligible to drop one grade at the class and distance of nomination if they have not won a race in the past three months.

The purpose of this is to increase the longevity of greyhounds in the racing population by ensuring that older greyhounds, who have lost form in the higher grades, can continue to compete in a suitable standard of racing.

The changes will take effect from Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

2. Class 1 Eligibility

Maiden greyhounds will be eligible to nominate for Class 1 staying events provided they have met the minimum performance requirements as stipulated in the grading procedures.

The purpose of this is to provide opportunities for maiden greyhounds showing potential as stayers and recognises that staying events are almost exclusively conducted at Class 1 meetings.

The changes will take effect from Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

3. Open Masters Trial

RQ consulted with the QGBOTA, and Queensland Race Clubs, regarding a proposal to introduce open masters events at QLD race meetings.

After consideration of the feedback, RQ has determined to commence a three-month trial of open masters events in order to gauge nomination demand and competitiveness.

The trial will consist of the following events:

  • Albion Park (1x 331m, 1x 395m, 1x 520m)
  • Ipswich (1x 288m, 1x 431m, 1x 520m)
  • Capalaba (1x 366m)
  • Bundaberg (1x 460m)
  • Rockhampton (1x 407m)
  • Townsville (1x 380m)

The trial will commence in December 2020.

All eligible first, second, and third grade greyhounds will be considered for open masters events during the trial. Eligible fourth and fifth grade greyhounds will need to nominate for open masters in order to be considered for these events.

The dates for specific open masters events during the trial period will be advertised in race programs in the Chase Magazine and on the Racing Queensland website.
