Race 1: CASHCOR ENGINEERING QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H'CAP – 1250M

TUTELAGE – Slow to begin. Inconvenienced soon after jumping by another runner which shifted out abruptly.

CRAIGLEA CHANTILLY – Slow to begin. Inconvenienced soon after jumping by another runner which shifted out abruptly. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly, which trailed the field throughout, revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Ms K. Johnston was advised that a warning would be placed on the filly, which was having its first race start, for its lack of competitiveness.

CHLOE JADE – Began awkwardly. Shifted out soon after the start, inconveniencing runners to its outside. Jockey M. Abe was fined $100 for excessive use of the whip (7 times) prior to the 100m.

Race 2: CAIRNS CAR BROKERS MAIDEN H'CAP – 950M

The start of this race was delayed when MISS BOYD, which was fractious in the enclosure, was late arriving at the barriers. The start was further delayed when SMOKIN’ TOMMY refused to load.

SMOKIN’ TOMMY was a late scratching at 2:32 pm after refusing to load into the barriers. Prior to the declaration of correct weight stewards advised that all monies invested on the gelding would be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 2:32 pm:

13 cents in the dollar for the win #4
11 cents in the dollar for place of winner #4
7 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #5
20 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #6

Trainer Mr T. Rowe was advised that the gelding would be required to trial satisfactorily on two consecutive occasions prior to again being permitted to start in a race.

LORMEZ LOVE – Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously in the home straight.

COLONEL PENAGA – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the event.

GRAZIE MILLE BELLA – Bumped by another runner on jumping. Clipped heels near the 500m and had to be checked. Jockey A. Sewell, the rider of DEIGO BAY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) in that near the 500m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of GRAZIE MILLE BELLA. In arriving at this decision and having considered the evidence of jockey B. Thomson, the rider of GRAZIE MILLE BELLA, the positions of DEIGO BAY and other runners, and locations pinpointed by stewards during the inquiry, and despite the evidence of jockey Sewell that his mount had been inclined to hang in, stewards were satisfied that the charge of careless riding could be sustained and jockey Sewell’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, from Wednesday 29 January up to and including Wednesday 5 February 2020.

SHE’S NIC’N OFF – As L. Tilley was to be overweight, N. Yadi was substituted as the rider of the mare. L. Tilley was fined $150. Raced ungenerously approaching the 450m turn, attempted to improve into a tight run to the inside of HE’S BLESSED, which shifted in slightly on the point of the turn, causing SHE’S NIC’N OFF to be tightened and lose ground.

COURAGEOUS CHLOE – Slow to begin. When questioned into his riding of the mare in the early stages Jockey A Sewell advised the mare was reluctant to stretch out in the early stage despite his efforts and he advised connections that in his opinion the mare would be better suited without earmuffs in running. His explanation was noted.
