SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS

Cairns Thursday 14 May 2020

Race 5. Ratings Band 0-55 Handicap 1250m

Stewards reviewed an incident which occurred near the 800m resulting in interference to MISS CELITA (App. E Cass), BUOYANCY (W D’Avila), and AMULETO (G Watson). After speaking with Jockey R Payne who rode CELESTIAL JEWEL, and the other 3 aforementioned riders, and viewing available patrol footage, it was evident that CELESTIAL JEWEL which had been racing very ungenerously leading up to the incident had shifted out abruptly approaching the 800m crossing and in doing so had encroached on the running of MISS CELITA which had also been racing ungenerously. As a result MISS CELITA was checked and forced outwards taking both BUOYANCY and AMULETO wider on the track. As Stewards were of the opinion that the incident was largely due to the racing manners of both CELESTIAL JEWEL and MISS CELITA no action was taken against any individual rider.

Race 6. Ratings Band 0-55 Handicap 1250m

Stewards interviewed Jockey G Watson (STYLE LINE) in relation to an incident which took place in the barriers during loading. After hearing Jockey Watson’s submission and viewing available patrol footage, it was evident that the gelding PARTY PIES (M Abe), after proving very difficult to load,  had become extremely fractious, once loaded, rearing on 2 occasions with Jockey Watson mounted on STYLE LINE in an adjacent barrier almost being struck by PARTY PIES’ off fore hoof. When attempts by 2 Barrier Attendants to reverse PARTY PIES from its barrier proved unsuccessful, Jockey Watson, in a further attempt to coax the gelding out of the barrier, reached into the adjoining barrier and made light contact, with the padded component of his whip, using a backhanded tapping action, in the vicinity of the gelding’s nose. When questioned Jockey Watson stated that he took this action as he had serious concerns that PARTY PIES may again become fractious and in doing so cause injury to either him or his mount. Stewards in acknowledging Jockey Watson’s concerns were genuine and justified, and that the safety of horse and rider is paramount, as well as the circumstances surrounding the incident, took no action against Jockey Watson.

Race 8. Ratings Band 0-55 Handicap 950m

On Friday 15 May a review of the race meeting revealed that SUNNY SAILOR (C Jokic) and OCTOBER STORM (App. R Shred) began from incorrect adjacent barriers. After interviewing both riders and Starter Mr I Smith, Stewards advised Mr. Smith to review his practices to ensure that all runners are directed to the correct barrier and both Jockey C Jokic and App. R Shred were severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR198.
