SPURIOUS – Held up for a short distance passing the home turn.

MILITARY KINGS – After being caught four wide in the early stages was allowed to stride forward to obtain the lead passing the 1100m. After passing the 300m when placed under pressure commenced to weaken and finished at the rear of the field. Jockey M. McGillivray explained that the gelding travelled well for the majority of the event however, when placed under pressure failed to respond.A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a minor laceration to its near fore knee.

NEVER LOSE FAITH – Held up for a short distance passing the home turn. When asked to explain the seemingly improved performance Trainer B. Healey stated that the filly has been unlucky in recent starts and with a much better run in transit today and the step up in journey on the heavy track in his opinion suited the filly for today’s event. Stewards noted his explanation.

MISS PIERPOINT – Passing the 400m commenced to lay in and continued to lay in for the remainder proving difficult for its rider to fully test his mount.

PAPAYA – Laid out under pressure over the final 100m.

MINJEE – Raced three wide without cover throughout. When asked to comment on the performance Jockey R. Fradd stated that his instructions were to push forward out of the barriers in order to obtain a forward position with cover. However, after being moderately away and pressured early was unable to obtain a forward position with cover and was subsequently caught three wide. Stewards also questioned Jockey Fradd as to whether there was an opportunity to restrain to obtain a position one wide at the rear with cover behind SHEZABEANS near the 900m. Jockey Fradd advised Stewards that at that point of the race the speed slackened and he felt he would be unable to restrain the filly to obtain that position and therefore with the moderate tempo allowed the filly the stride forward without pressure. Jockey Fradd added that the combination of being caught wide from an awkward alley and the first start in a race on a heavy track may have contributed to the filly’s finishing effort. Jockey Fradd further added that in his opinion the filly would be better suited on a firmer track than that of today’s event.

Race 3: Family Raceday 4 April QTIS 2YO C&G Maiden Plate – 1200m

The start was delayed by three minutes when EDIFICATION cast a near hind plate prior to leaving the enclosure, which had to be refitted. Upon arrival at the barriers the colt underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.

Correct weight was delayed by Stewards to consider an application made by Jockey M. Cahill the rider of DISARMED to have it declared a non-runner. After hearing evidence from Jockey Cahill, Trainer M. Wilson and both the Starter and Assistant Starter, Stewards were satisfied that as the start was effected DISARMED reared and lost considerable ground. Stewards were of the opinion that only for its own manners the horse was afforded every opportunity to begin with the rest of the field and therefore denied the application and deemed it a runner.

Stewards further delayed correct weight to consider whether BETTER GET READY, which lunged at the barrier, had activated the start. After hearing evidence from Jockey R. Fradd and both the Starter and Assistant Starter, Stewards were satisfied that the Starter had effected the start simultaneously as BETTER GET READY lunged forward.

DISARMED – Reared as the start was effected and lost considerable ground. As Jockey M. Cahill was of the view that the gelding may have made contact with the barriers with its head he desisted from pressuring his mount throughout the event.
