QRIC Stewards Report

ESK JOCKEY CLUB:16th DECEMBER 2017
Weather: Fine Track:Good 3  Rail:True
Stewards: K Daly, T Frazer
Starter: C Williams
Clerk of Scales: Stewards
Judge: L Smyth
Veterinarian: Dr I Trueman

General
As rider B Powell did not ride at today’s meeting, and when no other senior rider was available, he was replaced as the rider of JERROCITY by app R Goldsbury,.

Race 1: MAIDEN PLATE800 Metres

HOLUS BOLUS – underwent a pre-race Veterinary examination as had not had a start in almost two years and cleared fit to start.

PUNTA – stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground.  Trainer B Robinson was advised the gelding will require a further barrier certificate prior to its next race start.

KAWANA VIVA – slow to begin.

SHE’S FOR RANSOM –fractious when moving onto the track, and again on being pulled up after the event.  Trainer G Hay was advised a warning would be placed on the mare’s pre-race manners.

Race 2: BENCHMARK 55 HDCP 800 Metres

MONTE LAGO – slow to begin.

JEPTOO – raced wide throughout.  Had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

EARLSTOUN RULER – raced wide throughout.

GIPPSLAND BOY – rider C Small was reprimanded under AR137(b) for failing to ride the gelding out fully to the line.  In assessing penalty, Stewards were of the belief his actions had not cost GIPPSLAND BOY fourth placing.

MOLLY MIYAKO – slow to begin.

COALBANK CAVIAR – rider reported at scale had a tendency to race greenly at various stages of the event, and in the home straight laid in under pressure resulting in the gelding being unable to be fully tested over the final 100 metres.

Race 3: MAIDEN PLATE1200 Metres

Correct weight was delayed to allow app T Williams, rider of second placegetter I’M SASSY, to view the race footage over the final 100 metres.  After doing so, correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.

INOCCIN – slow to begin. Crowded and had to be steadied near the 800 metres when momentarily tightened by I’M SASSY.  At scale rider A Merritt reported the gelding, which was having its first race start, would in his opinion better suited in races over a longer distance, and will take benefit from today’s run.

HOLD ON – slow to begin. Jockey K Yoshida was found guilty of a charge under AR137(a) in that rounding the home-turn when riding his mount along, carelessly shifted out from behind LUCKY’S LIL GIRL, resulting in BIG VEGA being taken wider and awkwardly placed at the heels of HOLD ON and having to be checked.  MAGEQUILL, which was racing to the outside of BIG VEGA, was also taken wider and inconvenienced in this incident.  The riding licence of K Yoshida was suspended for a period of seven days commencing midnight 23/12/17 up to and including midnight 30/12/17.  In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account K Yoshida’s excellent record over the past four years under this rule.

MAGEQUILL – taken wider and inconvenienced rounding the home turn.

TOROKINA – raced greenly near the 500 metres and lost ground. App S Sweeney reported at scale the mare was field shy at that point in the race and did not appreciate racing tightly to the inside of other runners.

I’M SASSY – slow to begin.  Near the 800 metres shifted in momentarily. Improved onto the heels of TOROKINA at the 500 metres and shifted wider on the track.

BIG VEGA – taken wider and checked rounding the home turn.  Shifted in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

Race 4: BENCHMARK 65 HDCP 1460 Metres

OUR CLARKY – when questioned over tactics adopted in the early stages of the event, app N Lentini advised her instructions from her inside barrier were to have the gelding in a forward position if possible.  She added after beginning reasonably, OUR CLARKY settled in a mid-field position but did not respond to her riding, and as a result drifted further back in the field rounding the 1200 metre turn.  Trainer B Hudson confirmed the instructions issued and expressed some disappointment in the ride in the early stages. After viewing the race replay, app Lentini agreed that under the circumstances she could have made greater effort to maintain a forward position, and that she had erred in allowing PROSPECTING to cross OUR CLARKY near the 1200 metres.    After taking into account app Lentini’s relative inexperience, Steward took the matter no further and noted the explanations of both parties.

Race 5: BENCHMARK 50HDCP 1750Metres

Due to a communication breakdown when weighing out app R Goldsbury, who was a late riding replacement on JERROCITY, incorrectly sent out the incorrect saddle cloth number.

STRATALENA – slow to begin.

ISLAND SUNSET – after racing outside the leader to the 700 metres, commenced to weaken and shifted in.  Approaching the 500 metres momentarily tightened when placed in restricted room.

LORD DARIUS – forced wider passing the 600 metres and placed in restricted room for a short distance.

BALLINA BAY – obliged to steady off the heels of the tiring ISLAND SUNSET approaching the 600 metres, and then shifted out to obtain clear running a short distance later.

CELESTIAL GREY – became fractious after being loaded into the barriers.  Raced wide during the early and middle stages of the event.
