Murphy, the rider of BONSEA, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in at that point when insufficiently clear of OVER THE VENTURE. Apprentice Murphy’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 13 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 20 January and expire at midnight on Friday 2 February 2018. In determining penalty, stewards took into account that apprentice Murphy had only recently returned from a careless riding suspension and that the degree of interference was mid-range.

JOHNHRO – B. Appo reported that the horse, which was first up after a spell, would derive a fitness benefit from today’s run and would be better suited over a greater distance than that of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the horse had speedy cuts on both hind legs.

I AM THE GENERAL – When asked to comment on the horse’s improved performance, trainer’s representative Mr N. Hahn advised that the gelding was having its first start for the Nolan stable and therefore he could not comment on the horse’s previous runs. He added that the gelding had worked well and jumped out well in preparation for today’s event and for that reason the stable expected a forward showing today.

DEEPEST – As L. Rolls was to be overweight, J. Taylor was substituted as rider. L. Rolls was fined $100. Bled from one nostril. Connections were advised that the horse must gallop satisfactorily over 1000m in the presence of a steward before racing again.

STRATALENA – Raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 7: OZLAV PLUMBING RATINGS BAND 0 – 58 H’CAP – 1400M

After being loaded, MUSGREY HILL sat down in the barriers and then reared over. After being released, the horse subsequently broke loose, galloped and broke through the running rail at the end of the 1600m chute, sustaining a fracture of the near foreleg and was subsequently euthanased on humane grounds. MUSGREY HILL was declared a late scratching at 5:30 pm.

HAYLEE PRINCE, which was drawn alongside MUSGREY HILL, was kicked during the incident, sustaining a laceration to the off hind leg, and was withdrawn on veterinary advice at 5:30 pm.

In the incident, BEACH DRUM broke through the barriers, cantered for a short distance before being quickly restrained by its rider and was subsequently cleared to start.
