Race 1: LOCKYER VALLEY PAINTING JASON DIETE 0427 031 470 MAIDEN H’CAP – 1400M

SKIPPER’S CALL – Raced wide throughout. Apprentice B. Nothdurft reported that his mount had a tendency to lay out throughout.

SKY ONE – Began moderately.

HEADLIGHTS – Began moderately. Disappointed for a run near the 80m.

CONISTON SUNRISE – Jumped away awkwardly, and shifted in making contact with ALMA BUBBLES. Raced 3 wide in the early and middle stages.

DER SIEGER – Overraced for a short distance leaving the 800m. Jockey K. Thomas was reminded of her obligation to ride her mounts out to the conclusion of the race.

ALMA BUBBLES – Forced wider on the track leaving the 800m, and was obliged to race 3 wide for the remainder.

COUNTRY LUCK – Dislodged its rider shortly after leaving the enclosure, and galloped a short distance before being recaptured. The gelding underwent a pre-race veterinary examination behind the barriers and was passed fit to start. When questioned by Stewards regarding the seemingly improved performance, Trainer Mr. C. Anderson stated that the gelding has not recently been suited to racing on soft surfaces. He added that the gelding has a tendency to overrace when ridden forward with blinkers and for this reason he had removed the blinkers from the horse’s gear. He went on to say that the gelding had won a recent barrier trial at Eagle Farm, and he had therefore expected a forward showing today. Stewards noted the explanation.

CALISTO – Slow to begin and lost ground.

CEDAR RAPIDS – Left a trailing position leaving the 800m and improved wide on the course.

JANEMY – Held up approaching the final turn, and had a tendency to lay in under pressure for the remainder.

Race 2: VANDERFIELD (JOHN DEERE) GATTON CLASS 1 H’CAP – 860M

The start of this race was delayed when SEMI BLUE proved difficult to load. Connections were advised that a warning will be placed against the horse for its barrier manners.

The start was further delayed when SALTARELLO, which kicked out at the barriers, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. The mare subsequently refused to load and was declared a late scratching by order of Stewards at 12.33pm. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on SALTARELLO be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

11 cents in the dollar for the Win #4
13 cents in the dollar for place of winner #4
13 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #9
10 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #1

Trainer L. Paton was advised that she must obtain a further barrier certificate for the mare prior to it being permitted to race again.

NEW ALLIANCE – Bumped its offside hip leaving the enclosure, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination upon arriving at the barriers, and was passed fit to start. Raced wide throughout.

MISTER SPINKS – Overraced and shifted wider on the track near the 600m.

REMEMBER MARY – Bumped near the 600m, and was forced wider on the track. Hung in over the final 150m despite the efforts of its rider.

CRAFTY AQUILA – Jumped away awkwardly. Had difficulty obtaining a run near the 150m.

Race 3: LOCKYER PRODUCE GRANTHAM BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 860M

ISIS MAGIC – Hampered near the 600m. Race wide throughout.

HIGH COST – Raced wide throughout.

SWEET REPEAT – Severely checked leaving the 600m, and lost significant ground.

SEQ THE STAR – As J. Orman was to be overweight, M. McGillivray was substituted as rider. J. Orman was fined $100. Hung in under pressure over the final 100m.

AMBER JEWEL – Severely checked and lost considerable ground leaving the 600m and, as a result, took no significant part in the race from that point. Stewards inquired into the incident and established that SEQ THE STAR (M. McGillivray) hung out significantly at that point which had a major bearing on the interference suffered by AMBER JEWEL (R. Williams). Stewards also noted that HIGH COST (App. C. Gallagher), which was racing to the outside of AMBER JEWEL, may have contributed to the incident. After considering the evidence, Stewards could not attribute the interference to the actions of any one rider and took the matter no further, however a warning was placed on SEQ THE STAR for hanging out significantly leaving the 600m.

LIMBO STAR – Stewards permitted jockey L. Tilley to ride half a kilogram over his allotted weight as he was on the minimum. Jockey L. Tilley was fined $100. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Tilley’s previous good record in relation to this rule. Severely checked leaving the 600m, and lost significant ground.

Race 4: OZLAV PLUMBING BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1400M

DREAM CAPTAIN – As J. Bayliss was indisposed due to illness, R. Wiggins was substituted as rider.

TURKANA – When questioned by Stewards regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding, jockey J. Orman advised that he had been instructed by Trainer Mr. K. Jones to be positive out of the gates today and occupy a forward position, however he stated that it would have been his preference to take a trailing position behind the leaders. He added that as his mount had not been seriously pressured in the early stages he elected to maintain the lead. Stewards questioned Trainer Mr. K. Jones in relation to the gelding’s seemingly improved performance. Mr. Jones advised that at its most recent starts, the horse had been hanging in, and for this reason he added a one-eyed blinker to the horse’s gear. He further added that the horse had been forced to race wide at its most recent start. Stewards noted the explanation, however they advised Mr. Jones that they would expect the horse to be ridden in a similar manner in its future races.

SOLO ARTIST – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

SQUEAK’S BOY – Put in an awkward stride near the 700m. Hung in over the concluding stages. Disappointed for a run near the 100m.

WILHELMINA – Stewards permitted jockey L. Tilley to ride half a kilogram over his allotted weight as he was on the minimum. Jockey L. Tilley was fined $100. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Tilley’s previous good record in relation to this rule.

HAVEN ANGEL – Raced wide throughout. Cast the off fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare, which tired badly over the concluding stages, revealed the horse to be exhibiting an upper respiratory noise. Trainer R. Carter advised that the mare will now be retired. Nevertheless, Stewards advised Mr. Carter that the horse will require a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, and must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again.

Race 5: NIKKI CHALK ART & DESIGN BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1400M
The start of this race was delayed when PICK OF THE PUBS and EXCELLENT SPIRIT had to be resaddled upon arriving at the barriers.

EXCELLENT SPIRIT – Made contact with the running rail near the 300m. Held up for clear running until the 150m.

PREPEE – Raced 3 wide with cover throughout.

KID CRUIZE – Connections advised that it would be the intention for the gelding to be ridden further forward today if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Overraced in the middle stages. Disappointed for a run near the 300m.

ARGYLL BAY – Tightened for room shortly after the start. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

PEXBURY AVENUE – Tightened for room shortly after the start. Held up for a short distance rounding the final turn.

PANDORA’S TALE – Jumped away awkwardly and shifted in. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout. Tightened for room over the concluding stages when GET ON (App. B. Nothdurft) shifted in. Apprentice B. Nothdurft was reprimanded under AR. 137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in over the concluding stages tightening another runner.
