GENERAL:

Stewards inspected the stables of trainer John Zielke yesterday morning 18 May 2018 following the scratching of FAST AND HOPEFUL at 11:08am on Thursday 17 May 2018. Stewards identified the filly and were advised that it had sustained an injury during trackwork that morning. Therefore, the stable elected not to declare a rider whilst a decision was made as to whether the filly would compete. Subsequently the stable determined that the filly should be scratched. Stewards have directed the stable to provide evidence of the veterinary examination of FAST AND HOPEFUL which took place yesterday and the veterinary examination confirmed the filly to be lame in both the near and off fore legs and deemed unfit to race. Stewards were therefore not sufficiently satisfied that Mr Zielke was in breach of LR 38 for accepting with FAST AND HOPEFUL for the sole purpose of effecting the number of horses available for this race.

Prior to correct weight, co-trainer of AHWAHNEEHEE wished to view the photo finish image for 1st. After doing so, he was satisfied with the Judges placings and Stewards declared correct weight.

Trainer H Page was asked to explain why HASTEN SLOWLY was presented late in the enclosure. After hearing Mrs Pages explanation, Stewards reminded her of her obligation to present horses in the mounting yard in a timely manner.

HASTEN SLOWLY - Slow to begin. Then was ridden forward and caught 3 wide for the remainder of event. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, App. J Hodge explained that his instructions were to race in a forward position as the trainer believes that is where the gelding has trialled best. However, after being slowly away, he elected to allow the gelding to stride forward to comply with his instructions and was subsequently caught wide without cover. Stewards confirmed these instructions with Trainer H Page.

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to determine if LILAKAI which reared at the start and refused to jump be declared a non-runner. After viewing the patrol footage of the start in the presence of connections, stewards were satisfied that the reason LILAKAI reared and refused to jump was due to its manners and therefore deemed the filly a runner. Trainer C Waller was advised that the horse would require a barrier certificate prior to its next race start.

When questioned regarding his riding of the gelding, Jockey S Doyle explained that after being disappointed for the run in the early part of the straight, he was slightly held up but was of the opinion that the geldings run had come to an end and therefore elected not to overly pressure the gelding over the final 100m.
