A protest was lodged by jockey J. Babarovich, the rider of SURGICALplaced fourth by the judge, against DO I HAVE TO(R. Hancock) being declared first, alleging interference near the 200m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage it was established that near the 200m DO I HAVE TO shifted in tightening SURGICALto its inside. Whilst SURGICALwas forced to restrain, Stewards were of the opinion that the interference was not significant enough to uphold the protest or to warrant a change in the judges placings. At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey R. Hancock was severely reprimanded under AR131(a) for permitting his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear and reminded of his obligation to stop riding and straighten his mount.
