STEWARDS REPORT

SUNSHINE COAST TURF CLUB – SUNDAY, 14 JANUARY 2018

WEATHER – FINE             TRACK RATING – GOOD 4               RAIL – 9M  PENETROMETER – 5.92

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – J. Williamson
Stewards – C. Albrecht, K. Daly, T. Fraser
Clerk of Scales – P. Reardon
Judge –  P. Chilton, C. Dunn
Veterinarian – A. Murdoch
Swab attendants – J. Crompton, S. Heidke, C. Spencer
Starter – R. Hanson

Race 1: Emerald Valley QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate – 1600m

Prior to correct weight being declared, jockey R. Wiggins, rider of APPRECIATED, jockey P. Hammersley, rider of FULL DIAMOND,  both approached stewards to advise they did not believe their barrier had opened with the remainder of the field.  After taking evidence from both riders, starter, Mr R. Hanson, and viewing the footage, stewards were satisfied that both horses’ barriers had malfunctioned and had been slow to open. Stewards, acting under AR134A, ruled that APPRECIATED, which had finished 8th, would be declared a non runner, however as FULL DIAMOND had run third in the event and therefore exempt from the conditions of AR134A, stewards deemed that the horse be a runner and declared correct weight on the semaphored numbers with the following deductions applicable.

11 cents in the dollar for the win

9 cents in the dollar for place bets for win

12 cents in the dollar for 2nd place bets

11 cents in the dollar for 3rd place bets

Following this event, tests were performed on the barriers and after some remedial work being carried out by the starter and Sunshine Coast Turf Club staff were satisfied that the barriers were in working order.  Stewards confirmed with the starter and staff that tests had been carried out on these barriers prior to the first race, which had not indicated there were any problems with the mechanics and starting mechanism.

YANKEE TANGO – Jumped away awkwardly.  Jockey T. Brooker reported she was disappointed with the performance  and on pulling up the horse had a breathing abnormality and made a recommendation to connections that the horse may benefit from the addition of a tongue-tie. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be dehydrated, which may have affected its performance.

SIR BARNABUS – Shifted out to improve passing the 700m and raced 3 wide from that point onwards.

Race 2: Caloundra RSL Class 5 H’cap – 1200m

PRECISION STRIKE – Reared in the barrier prior to the start, causing jockey R. Stewart to strike his head on the back of the gates. On return to scale he was attended  to by medical staff and stood down from his remaining engagements. Riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.

VICTORY EIGHT – Apprentice A. Sewell was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that he rode aggressively in attempting to force a run to the inside of MAKE A RULER where there was insufficient room to do so.  Furthermore after making contact with MAKE A RULER, continued to ride aggressively in an attempt to force a run to the inside of that runner, which resulted in  apprentice T. Brooker having to direct  MAKE A RULER  outwards after becoming very awkward and causing MAKE A RULER and VICTORY EIGHT to become awkward and lose ground.  Apprentice Sewell was suspended from riding in races for a period of 10 days, to commence at midnight, 21 January and to expire at midnight, 31 January.

QUEENOFTHEPIXIES – Raced 3 wide without cover.

MAKE A RULER – When questioned jockey T. Brooker advised the horse travelled well until the 400m, however when placed under pressure failed to respond and proved very disappointing in the run to the line. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be making an abnormal  respiratory noise and connections were advised that they must provide the results of an endoscopic examination, which must be performed after exercise, along with the provision of a veterinary certificate prior to its next race start.

Race 3: Haymans Electrical & Data Caloundra Maiden Plate – 1000m

The start of this race was delayed when SINGLE LASS had to undergo farrier attention to reattach its off fore plate.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by M. Cahill, rider of the 3rd placegetter, TEYSSIER, against MAKES YOU THINK being declared 1st, alleging interference in the home straight. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video,  it was established MAKES YOU THINK shifted out near the 200m to secure clear running and in doing so brushed TEYSSIER. Stewards also established over the concluding stages MAKES YOU THINK shifted out under pressure, causing  TEYSSIER to be inconvenienced.  Stewards could not be satisfied that these incidents had materially affected the outcome of the event and therefore dismissed the objections and declared correct weight on the Judge’s numbers.

PROPENSITY – Tightened for room at the start and had to be steadied.

SINGLE LASS – Raced 3 wide without cover.

RED FACETS – Raced 4 wide without cover.

HENRY’S AFFAIR – Stewards questioned apprentice N. Keal regarding his riding of the horse, particularly in the early stages where it appeared the gelding lost touch with the remainder of the field.  Apprentice Keal indicated he had been instructed to allow the horse to settle in the early stages because it has not raced favourably when ridden aggressively in the early stages.  Those instructions were confirmed by trainer T. Thomas.  After viewing the patrol footage with stewards, apprentice Keal stated  in hindsight when  the horse commenced to lose ground from the 800m he had been slow to react in placing further pressure on the horse.  Stewards were however of the opinion, given  the instructions he had been issued, Mr Keal’s status as an apprentice, that no further action should be taken.

SINISTER PRINCESS – Held up for clear running in the home straight and near the 200m its rider  was obliged to stop riding and steady before shifting out to obtain clear running.

Race 4: Multimeat Australia Pty Ltd Class 2 H’cap - 1000m

Due to a significant delay in reshoeing SINGLE LASS in the previous event and the protest, the start of this race was also delayed.

LAUDIT – As it had  had not started for 12 months, the horse underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to take its place in the field.  The horse again  was inspected behind the barriers after slipping on the concrete when leaving the enclosure and again was passed fit to start.

BOGEY MAN – Raced 3 wide without cover.

Race 5: Oaks Hotel And Resorts Class 1 H’cap – 1600m

The start of this race was delayed due to a barrier malfunction when the starter initiated the start. This caused a number of barrier to remain closed.  The starter immediately declared a false start.  All runners were restrained without 600m of the start, were inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to take their place in the field. This set of barriers were subsequently tested and found to be functioning correctly.  Horses were reloaded into the barrier and the race commenced approximately 4 minutes late.  Subsequent to this event, the club was advised that they were to utilise the second set of barriers for the remaining 2 events.

DARESAY – Slow to begin.

ELLUSIVE ELEMENT – Significantly slow to begin.

TIMELY REMINDER - Approaching the 600m was severely inconvenienced by another runner and forced wider on the track.

SILENT FLYER – Raced 3 wide without cover until approaching the 800m. Approaching the 600m was severely inconvenienced by another runner and forced wider on the track. Rider M. Powell was struck on the arm by the whip of another rider over the concluding stages, causing jockey Powell to drop his off-side rein.

STUDLY ROOSTER – Slow to begin. Checked significantly by another runner approaching the 600m as a result of COSGROVE losing ground and shifting out quickly.  Raced wide  throughout.

COSGROVE – Broke down in the near foreleg passing the 700m.  Shifted out abruptly, inconveniencing other runners and was restrained at a  point near the 400m.  Upon a veterinary examination  it was found that COSGROVE had fractured both near fore sesamoids bones and was euthanased on humane grounds. Samples were taken from COSGOVE and sent to be analysed.

WESTBROOK WARRIOR – Hung in badly under pressure in the home straight.

Race 6:  Sunshine Coast Food Services F&M Ratings Band 0-65 H’cap – 1400m

IRISH VICE – Trainer L. Birchley was fined $100 for presenting the horse late to the enclosure.

The start of this race was delayed due to the false start in the previous event.

NORTHERN DIVINE – Chance of tactics. Connections advised the horse would be ridden quietly from the wide barrier. After beginning well, jockey L. Tarrant reported that he elected shortly after the start to ride forward and assume the lead as he felt he would have more opportunity to secure a position closer to the fence than if he restrained.

IZZAH – Declared a late scratching  at 4.14 pm after the mare was kicked by another runner behind the barriers, and deemed unfit to start after a veterinary inspection.

Subsequent to the event all monies invested on the horse were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable.

8 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets
12 cents in the dollar for the face value of place bets for the win
6 cents in the dollar on the face value of 2nd place bets
12 cents in the dollar for on the value of 3rd place bets
