Race 1: KEY SUN ZINKE CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1000M
 
PERZERO – Stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground.
 
Race 2: UBET BENCHMARK 75 H'CAP – 1625M
 
JUST AS LOYAL – Stewards questioned jockey K. Yoshida as to whether there was an opportunity for him to secure clear running on the fence rounding the home turn rather than shifting out and being held up before shifting back to the inside near the 250m where ultimately he secured clear running. Jockey Yoshida advised that from the 500m, when racing on the fence, he elected to shift from behind BERNIE OF BABYLON, which was carrying 59kg, to a position behind TUNE OUT, which was carrying 52kg, as he believed it would be more advantageous to track that runner into the race, given the weight differential between those two runners and given that he expected BERNIE OF BABYLON to weaken. Jockey Yoshida added that whilst a run appeared on the fence rounding the home turn, he had already committed to a one-off position and therefore was unable to immediately secure this run. He also stated that as a result of BERNIE OF BABYLON not weakening as he had expected, this resulted in him being held up before ultimately shifting back to the inside where he secured clear running. Stewards noted the explanation.
 
TUNE OUT – Began awkwardly.
 
CELTIC RUSH – Stewards questioned jockey N. Tomizawa in regard to the tactics he adopted on the horse, which resulted in the gelding racing wide throughout in the small field. Jockey Tomizawa advised that in assessing the race he expected to be in a rearward position, however the instructions issued shortly prior to mounting the gelding were to allow the horse to settle where it was comfortable and to not overly restrain the horse. Jockey Tomizawa added that for that reason, after beginning reasonably, he was reluctant to overly restrain CELTIC RUSH to a position trailing LADY ATHENA and therefore allowed the horse to stride in the early and middle stages of the event. Jockey Tomizawa further added that from the 1100m he allowed the horse to stride forward when caught wide, with the intention of crossing TUNE OUT, however as TUNE OUT was travelling stronger than CELTIC RUSH at that point of the race, he was unable to obtain this position. Jockey Tomizawa went on to say that from the 800m the gelding was under pressure and never travelled strongly from that point. Stewards noted the explanation.
 
Race 3: CANADIAN CLUB CLASS 3 H'CAP – 1300M
 
As L. Tilley was to be overweight, M. Hellyer was substituted as the rider of INTERLUDE and PEGGY LEIGH in Race 7. L. Tilley was fined $200.
 
CHELSEA STAR – After being caught wide in the early stages, E. Ljung restrained her mount to a position closer to the rails at the tail of the field and as a result settled further back than anticipated. Checked near the 400m to avoid the heels of MADAM SHAZAM (N. Tomizawa), which shifted out to secure clear running. N. Tomizawa was reprimanded.
 
BENICO’S PRINCE – Stewards accepted trainer P. Kings’ explanation for the late declaration of J. Oliver as rider.
 
Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to GOOD 3.
 
Race 4: JIM BEAM QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
 
FRONT FOOT – Had to be checked near the 1000m to avoid the heels of MAKE A RULER, which shifted in when insufficiently clear. Bradley Appo, the rider of MAKE A RULER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1100m, whilst riding his mount along, he permitted it to shift in when insufficiently clear of FRONT FOOT and JOMAR SAGA. Bradley Appo’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 12 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 29 January and expire at midnight on Friday 10 February 2017.
 
HENRY’S AFFAIR – Placed in restricted room and eased near the 300m when WALK OF SHAME (B. Newport) shifted in. B. Newport was reprimanded for this incident.
 
MAKE A RULER – Put its head down in the barriers as the start was effected and as a result lost ground. Shifted out to avoid the heels of another runner whilst racing keenly passing the 800m.
 
THE PONTSTER – Dipped shortly after the start. Laid in in the home straight.
 
WALK OF SHAME – Raced wide throughout.
 
JOMAR SAGA - Had to be checked near the 1000m to avoid the heels of MAKE A RULER, which shifted in when insufficiently clear.
 
RED BLANKET – Steadied from heels shortly after the start. Laid in in the home straight.
 
THUMBS UP – Forced wider on the track by another runner at the 800m.
 
Race 5: MAKERS MARK MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M
 
FAREWELL ANNA, which was kicked behind the barriers, was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 2:39 pm. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on FAREWELL ANNA be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 2:39 pm, taking account of multiple late scratchings of FAREWELL ANNA at 2:39 pm and HERRSCHAFT and ZYGALSKI at 2:46 pm:

HERRSCHAFT and ZYGALSKI, which refused to be loaded, were declared late scratchings by order of stewards at 2:46 pm. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on HERRSCHAFT and ZYGALSKI be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed between 2:39 pm and 2:46 pm:

Trainers G. Betros (HERRSCHAFT) and J. Dann (ZYGALSKI) were advised that their respective horses must obtain further barrier certificates prior to being permitted to race again.
 
CHATARA – On returning to scale apprentice R. Williams reported that her mount laid in for the majority of the event and proved difficult to ride out in the home straight.
 
GRAN SABANA – Raced three wide throughout.
 
POET’S SOCIETY – J. Oliver could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of the horse, which he advised travelled comfortably throughout the event, however when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding. Trainer B. Currie advised that in light of the performance today he will now review the horse’s current preparation.
 
Race 6: WINNING EDGE BENCHMARK 58 H'CAP – 1850M
 
CAPTAINS WAY – Connections advised that with the blinkers back on today, it would be the intention to have the horse ridden in a forward position in the early stages. After being caught wide in the early stages J. Oliver allowed his mount to stride forward and obtain the leading position passing the 1000m.
 
DAKOTA ROCKS – Connections advised that it again would be the intention to have the horse ridden off the pace.
 
REDSERA – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
RUBY GURU – Momentarily held up rounding the home turn.
 
ST JAMES SQUARE – Raced three wide throughout without cover.
 
Race 7: WELLCAMP AIRPORT F&M CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M
 
RED CHANDELIER – Raced wide throughout.
 
MANHATTAN MUSE – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
THAT SCHMIDT GIRL – On returning to the enclosure M. O’Brien reported that the horse had got its tongue over the bit. Connections advised that they will consider the addition of a tongue tie to the horse’s gear.
 
SILVER SCREEN – Tightened for room at the start. Raced three wide throughout.
 
Race 8: STRATHAYR C,G&E CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M
 
CAPTAIN LEO – Bumped on a number of occasions rounding the home turn. Following the horse’s disappointing performance, trainer B. Currie advised that the gelding will now be sent for a spell.
 
DEUS – When attempting to shift out to secure clear running near the 350m, made contact with another runner on a number of occasions.
 
NAVAJO PRINCE – Raced ungenerously in the early stages whilst being restrained.
 
SAVAGE HOOD – Began awkwardly, made heavy contact with the barrier partition and lost ground.
 
MON CLINTON – Reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding.
