Race 1: SKY RACING Maiden Handicap 1800 metres

SCENIC RIM – As Jockey J Huxtable was to be overweight, he was subsequently replaced by Jockey A Fancourt. Jockey Huxtable was fined $200 for accepting the ride on the gelding when overweight. AR190(3). After being caught wide in the early stages, was ridden forward by its rider to obtain the leading position near the 1400m.

BULLET HERO – Near the 1600m, momentarily raced in restricted room and was eased. Held up rounding the home turn. Near the 250m, commenced to lay in making contact with the hind quarters of JEWEL FLIGHT and as a result became unbalanced and shifted out abruptly. For the remainder of the event, had a tendency to lay in.

Race 2: WILKINSON SEAFOOD QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1400 metres

BETTER CLASS – Jumped in the air at the start and lost ground.

REBEL NEWS – Raced three-wide without cover from the 900m. Hung out for the majority of the event.

RED TOP – Slow to begin and then failed to muster early speed. Stewards questioned jockey J Guthmann-Chester in relation to the performance of the gelding. Jockey Guthmann-Chester advised that prior to the event, with the benefit of race experience, he had expected the gelding to be able to obtain a midfield position. Jockey Guthmann-Chester added however the gelding was slow to begin and failed to stride out in the early stages and for that reason settled in a rearward position. Jockey Guthmann-Chester went on to say that during the middle stages until a point near the 150m, the gelding travelled reasonably and took some time to quicken into the event despite his urgings. Jockey Guthmann-Chester added that over the final 150m the gelding responded to his riding and finished the race off well. When asked by stewards as to whether there was an opportunity to improve wider on the track from the 500m rather than improving to the inside, jockey Guthmann-Chester advised that near the 500m he was positioned inside the heels of BONNIE VALE which was racing to his outside and as a result of this he was reluctant to take hold of his mount to ease around this runners heels and therefore he formed the decision to elect to obtain runs to the inside. Stewards noted Jockey Guthmann-Chester’s explanation.

THE UPRISING– Began awkwardly. Near the 1100m, momentarily raced in restricted room and was eased.

BONNIE VALE – Cast its near hind plate in running.

Following the running of race 3, the track was upgraded to a good 4.

BECANDLENI – Over raced during the early and middle stages. Jockey N Callow reported that the mare over raced in the early and middle stages and for that reason from near the 800m he allowed the horse to stride forward to improve into the event. Jockey Callow added that whilst the mare quickened for a short distance it was under pressure prior to the home turn and in his opinion, over racing in the early stages was the major contributing factor to what in his view was a disappointing performance.

THE PINES – Jockey R Fradd advised that the mare travelled comfortably in the run in a worse than midfield position as per its customary racing pattern however when asked to quicken in the home straight the mare responded for only a short distance and peaked on its run passing the 100m. Jockey Fradd added that as the mare was only second up from a lengthy spell in today’s event, it would derive a significant fitness benefit from today’s event.
