Trainer Ray McCall has primed Craiglea Charm perfectly this season with the mare picking up the recent $100,000 fillies and mares race at Eagle Farm.
The $64,000 winner’s cheque in the SITA Environmental Solutions Handicap 1300m gave Craiglea Charm (M5 Waterford Road-Chinese Princess) her first win for the season after recording two impressive runs in town plus a close second in the Ballina Newmarket.
“She drew 12 out of 12 and 58kg and she’s not a mare that gets back as she likes to race forward so we had to dig her out of the gates and go forward on her and get a position,” McCall said.
Jockey Shane Scriven rode the mare vigorously out of the barriers after jumping to the lead early in the race.
My First Affair (Scott Seamer) finished strongly in the final few hundred metres to get within a short neck from Craiglea Charm but came up short finishing in second place.
A battle for third place was fought a further one and a quarter lengths back but it was Toowoomba mare Hurl (Andrew Spinks) who claimed the honours.
“We thought we would be running third or fourth…but Shane Scriven said it was going too slow so he just took matters into his own hands,” McCall said.
“She’s won at Doomben leading. She’s one of those mares that has to be in the first two or three. She hasn’t got a brilliant turn of foot but she will keep running.”
Last season Craiglea Charm picked up several metropolitan placings plus one win at City Pacific Doomben when she jumped from barrier 11.
“Her four starts back this time she’s drawn outside three times and the only time she drew an alley was at Ballina and probably on the day in all fairness on the fence wasn’t the place to be because the track was dead and it was a bit soft,” McCall said.

McCall will likely set his next target on another fillies and mares race on October 4 at City Pacific Doomben with Craiglea Charm after her impressive performance at Eagle Farm.
“We’re very pleased with her. I think she did a really good job,” McCall said.
“Hopefully we won’t get too much weight and we can go in the next one of the fourth.”
