Stromboli became the latest QTIS winner by Monashee Mountain when he scored by a half-length. His dam was one of the last mares by Zvornik (Todman) at stud, certainly in the Eastern States, when she died a month after foaling Stromboli in 2004. Inner Fire was runner-up to pocket dynamo Lady Saran in the 1985 WATC Ngawyni St (LR) and was sold out of WA after missing to Fairfields sire The Fort in 1991.

Laura is the most northerly racecourse in Queensland on the road to Cape York. Its annual cup day provided a well-bred maiden winner – the Terry Crossland trained Hot Desire. She won a Gosford barrier trial in March but was never a hope in three starts on the Central Coast. The filly is a half-sister to 9 winners, all by Lyndhurst sires, including Sydney sprinters (Sahara) Hot Nights (Celestial Dancer) & Jenks (Sequalo). It’s the family of G1 Doomben 10,000 winner Charlton Boy (Smokey Eyes).
Hot Desire was ridden by Jason Stopps and he doubled up in the Laura Cup on the Darryl Paradise trained Truss (Fasliyev).

Dancing Beni had shown his first glimpse of form at Beaudesert on Anzac Day and he kept improving to score a three-quarter length win in this maiden. The winner is by former Glenlogan Park sire Kbenjar and is from a winning half-sister to Dancing Report (Call Report), a winner of 16 races in NSW and Queensland and he was also G1 placed in a QTC Stradbroke. Dancing Beni’s dam was retired after missing to Ivory's Irish in 1996.

Sequalo gelding Isaidiam was only a month away from turning four but he was right up to the mark on debut. Starting a pronounced $2.40 favourite, he ranged up in the straight and then raced away to score by four lengths. The Lyndhurst stallion got him from a winning mare without any black-type in her immediate family. The dam has 2yo sister to Isaidiam, a yearling half-sister by Easy Rocking and a weanling half-brother by Taimazov.

McKinlay draws racegoers from far and wide and punters would have been happy when even-money favourite Crypt won the QTIS race on the supporting card by a neck. His only other win had been as an October 2yo at Toowoomba in 2006. The winner is part-owned by Oaklands Stud’s Neville Stewart and is by deceased sire Iglesia from a half-sister to six winners and the dam of G1 VATC CF Orr Stakes winner Special Dane (Danehill). Queen Mai has a yearling colt by Pure Theatre. The McKinlay Cup was won by the Charlie Prow trained Evading (Dodge).

Desert Hayil was unplaced in one-off runs at Gold Coast in August 2007 and at Ipswich in January 2008 before resuming here to win first-up at his third attempt. Hayil got the winner from a unraced mare who hails from an English family heavily influenced by staying stock. Desert Desire has a weanling filly by Telesto (NZ) and was served by Tycoon Ruler last year.

Sheemon had not been sighted at his first two starts in June but he improved to deny odds-on favourite Commizarations by a long neck. He is by Monashee Mountain from an unraced half-sister to Brisbane winners Persian Purse (Namnan), Steely Smile (Steel Blade) and Steel Intent (Tussac). The dam died in Dec 2004.

Lucky Landing had been buffeted badly in several of his starts, however, he enjoyed a better transit at Warwick and duly saluted by a length. Raheen Stud got good value from sponsoring this race – the winner is by their resident sire Anglia who also sired Sunshine Coast Guineas winner Sam’s Express on the same day. Lucky Landing is from a Doomben winner who died in 2006 after producing her last foal – by Rock of Cashel.

Mfuwe was a brilliant juvenile defeating Feline Hunter on debut at Eagle Farm and then winning the 2007 Magic Millions 2YO Trophy on the Gold Coast. He was vetted after a last-start failure at Eagle Farm but brought his A game to the Sunshine Coast last Sunday. He is a grey, like his sire Lion Hunter, and is a half-brother to Emit Time (Gilded Time),who was a Brisbane juvenile winner before being sold off-shore to win the Sultan Gold Vase (LR) at Perak. Another half-brother Millennium Express (Iglesia) was a 2yo winner in Sydney at only start this season. Their dam has a weanling filly by Ferocity.
