LIVE COVERAGE: Doomben 3 August

Doomben hosts the National Jockey Trust and Multicultural Raceday. This is an important day for the racing community to dig deep to help injured jockeys going through financial hardship and this year's raceday doubles as the state's largest multicultural celebration.

Race 1 - 11:53AM TAB QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap (1050 METRES)

"I was really really confident coming in today, we'd been trying him over the 1350-1400 metre range without luck and really tapered off his work for the sprint this week, his future is over the shorter trip."

"He led last start and didn't get to the line as strong as we would have liked."

"I said to Michael (Cahill) today try to get him some cover and he should finish strong over the shorter trip."

"Today defintely tells us his future is as a sprinter."

"He knows his horses well and Tony (Sears) placed him perfectly for this assignment today."

"We drew a little bit awkward and got back a little further than I would have liked, but it was obvious when he started to travel from the 600 he was going to be in the finish."

"A bit congratulations to the staff back home who are doing all the work with him, he's just relishing it at the moment."

"I think that's his ninth start for us and fourth victory, he just keeps getting better and better I'm not sure how far he will go, I still think in another twelve months he'll be a far better horse."

"We've got to consider sending him to Melbourne for something in the Spring he's going that well."

"He's turned into a real nice stayer this horse, today he just relaxed beautifully that's why I didn't mind covering him up he felt great."

"I've ridden him a few times now and that's the best he's felt the way he relaxed and then switched on as soon as I asked him for an effort he had it won a long way out."

"He's always shown a lot of ability right from the get go, the day he was his maiden here he was very impressive before hitting a bit of a flat spot, but he's well and truly back now."

"The last couple of weeks he's really turned it round and looks like a really good honest galloper."

"Credit to the horse and the rider (Sean Cormack), he had plenty against him today with the 59 kilos and first go over the 1350 metres."

"We got tucked away in the box seat, I just had to wait for a run at the top of the straiht but when it came he quickened nicely."

"You wouldn't know it was his first go over the trip, he relaxed beautifully and was doing his best work late."

"He's always up there in these sprint races without breaking through, it was really nice to see him get a bit of reward for effort."

"His last start at Grafton was fairly plain, but we brought him back to a track he knows well and he was first out and first home."

"He's a genuine sprinter this horse, I rode him at Eagle Farm and with the big straight he just gets found out over the later stages."

"We were able to pounce to the lead today and around the tighter track he kicked well off the turn and they weren't going to catch us."

"It's been a while, obviously I've had a fair bit going on with the new addition to the family, but it feels great to be back in town riding a winner for Harold (Norman) who's always backed me."

"He got a cheap sectonal in front from about the 900 to the 750 and that left a little bit in the tank at the end and the 54 kilos certainly helped too."

"Harold will be resting up at home after his knee surgery, I hope this brings as big a smile to his face as mine."

"We've (Jockey/Husband Matthew Palmer) got two little girls now and it obviously takes a fair bit of work to come back from having a child, riding a horse is easier than parenting any day."

Race 6 - 2:57PM EUREKA STUD 0 - 70 Handicap (1350 METRES)

"It was great to see him get there today, his Doomben runs and runs beyond 1200 metres have always been a challenge, it was great to see him step up to the plate today."

"I'd be interested to think what Robbie (Fradd) thinks going forward, he looked like he was right on his limit distance wise."

"It's just bloody great to get a Saturday winner here at Doomben I couldn't care less how much money it's for, there is nothing like winning in town."

"Paul said to me don't be afraid to get stuck into him a way out he'll find plenty for you and that's how it panned out."

"He was travelling for me a long way out and a lot better than I was in the jockeys race, so I just gave him a stoke up and he kept finding."

"I think he could go further, but the tempo he'll find over the 1400 metres looks pretty spot on for him."

"He suprised me he was that sharp at 1200 first up, I thought some of these horses might be a bit sharp for him today, but Jimmy Byrne got the best out of him."

"This should set him on the way to a very good preparation I see his future all at the 1400 metres to the mile and I have to say he got under my guard today I thought the stablemate (Macewen) would have him covered."

"When he gets to those suitable distances we're going to see a much better horse."

"I didn't want to go too early on him I really held on as long as possible, I had to do a bit of work with him early in the race he was fantastic to hold together and win in good time."

"He's a bit of a querky horse he's going to get better with an extra couple of furlongs, but a good way to start."

"He's a tough horse and we've probably got him going the best he's ever been."

"I have to give a shoutout to Luke Tarrant who does a lot of work with him, he got off him on Tuesday when he galloped and said if ever he's going to run 1200 it was this week and he was spot on."

"As he's got older he's embraced the whole process of parading well and then taking it to the track, we'll try to look for suitable race for him in Sydney if he can hold his condition."

"He won this race twelve months ago over the thousand and it's a real honour to go back to back in memory of Tim Bell and his contribution to racing."

"I didn't want to hit him because he was all out, i gave him a little tap late which he didn't appreciate so I went back to hands and heals."

"Great result for the stable all three horses drew and mapped well and complemented by good jockeys top result."

"He musters good speed and he's an on tempo horse, he doesn't like to do things the easy way, but boy he's tough."

"If you want a horse coming at you it's probably The Avenger, but he likes a fight the winner."

"It was my first ride on the horse and Paul said not to worry about pressing forward and keeping a high tempo because he likes it tough."

"When we peeled off the back of the leader we hit the front pretty early and it looked like he might do it soft, but when the stable mate leveled up he knuckled down."
